MIDDLETOWN, CT. – The No. 7 nationally-ranked Wesleyan women's soccer team made history on Saturday afternoon, clinching the top seed in the NESCAC for the first time in program history as they shutout Colby College in a one-goal victory at Jackson Field to celebrate the Class of 2025.
The unbeaten Cardinals (12-0-2 overall, 7-0-2 NESCAC) made the most of their Senior Day celebrations, recognizing
Katie O'Connell,
Caty Clements,
Maddy Reynolds, and
Juliette Vemmer with a shutout victory that placed them atop of the NESCAC heading into the NESCAC Championships for the first time as they are set to make their fourth-straight tournament appearance.
Tying a program-record 14-game unbeaten streak in 2021, the Cardinals carried out their win with a second-half goal from
Waverly Meyers '26 at 79:45. Meyers' goal began as a free kick awarded to the Cardinals with O'Connell tripped up above the box. O'Connell took the initial kick, her shot finding MK Marshall in goal but bounced off Marshall's glove and the cross bar. Meyers was waiting outside the right post and nailed the game-winning goal off her left foot as the ball found the left corner of the goal.
The Mules did not see much of Brumbach to open the game as Clements and the defense were quick to keep them from crossing the midfield line, holding the Mules to only seven shots overall. The Mules' first shot came in the 23
rd minute with the Cardinals pressing heavily on Marshall. One of the first scoring opportunities for the Cardinals was the result of two corner kicks in a row, but Marshall punched the ball out of play and out of the goal.
Molly Brumbach '26 put a game-tying opportunity for the Mules to bed on a diving save with 30 minutes to go in regulation. Switching the field on a rush, Ella Caraluzzi pushed the ball down the near line, making a cross pass to Claire Walsh who took the shot. Brumbach tipped the ball with her glove and out of bounds on the dive.
Brumbach, facing six shots on goal, made all six saves to earn her 10
th win of the season and her ninth shutout overall. Marshall finished the afternoon for the Mules with five saves.
The Cardinals return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 29, when they travel to Connecticut College for a 7 p.m. NESCAC match to close out the regular season.
