MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Three goals in just a span of just 6:44 minutes in the first period proved more than enough for Connecticut College who picked up a 4-1 road win over the Wesleyan men's hockey team on Saturday afternoon. Wesleyan drops to 0-2 on the season while the Camels sweep a weekend road series against Trinity and the Cardinals.
Just five seconds into their first power play chance of the game, Conn. won the offensive zone faceoff and worked the puck from d-to-d to the right side. Quinn Kennedy looked to his left for Andrew Eberling who received the pass and beat
Patrick McDevitt over the goalie's right shoulder.
The Camels took advantage of a Wesleyan turnover in the Cardinals' defensive end and Will Winship passed over to Devan Newhook who had time to line up a slapshot that clanged off the left post and in for a second Conn goal in a span of just 27 seconds.
Another shot from the point made it's way into the back of the net just over six minutes later as John Harrington took a wrister from just inside the blue line that made it through traffic and past McDevitt to make it 3-0 Conn.
Wesleyan got a much-needed quick goal to start the second period as
Jack Kane '25 wound up from the blue line and his attempt was deflected in by
Owen Sweet '25 as the Cardinals lowered the deficit to 3-1 just 21 seconds into the second period.
In a back-and-forth second period that featured 15 shots from each team, Wesleyan had a chance late with the man advantage as Will Winship took a five-minute major and game misconduct, giving the Cardinals a five-minute 5-on-4 power play. However, it was Conn. who managed to strike for a back-breaking goal as John Russo intercepted a pass and roofed a shorthanded goal as the Camels held a 4-1 lead before the end of the second period.
The Cardinals continued to push in the third period, outshooting Conn. 16-9, but nothing got past Will McEvoy in net for the Camels who finished with 38 saves in his first start of the season.
McDevitt made 19 saves in two periods of work before
Ethan Fehrenbaker '28 came on for the third period where he made nine saves with no goals allowed in 20 minutes of work.
Wesleyan continues NESCAC play next weekend with trips to Hamilton and Amherst.
