Alli Jones’ Career Game Leads Women’s Basketball Past St. Mary’s (MD), 88-78

Jones pumps in a career-high 21 points to lead the Cardinals to their first win of 2024-25

SAINT MARYS CITY, Md. – In a devastating display that saw her set career-highs in three statistical categories, Alli Jones' monster performance led the way to an 88-78 win for the Wesleyan women's basketball over St. Mary's of Maryland on Saturday in the finale of the Jamie L. Roberts Memorial Tournament. The Cardinals (1-1) rebound after Friday night's loss to No. 16 ranked Catholic while the Seahawks are now 2-2 on the year.

Jones' line included career-highs in points (22), assists (six), and blocks (three) as she shot 8-for-13 from the floor and a perfect 6-for-6 from the floor throw line. The sophomore added seven rebounds (five offensive) with two steals in 34 minutes in the win. She shattered her previous career-high in points of 13 as this represented her first career 20-point game.

Coming off a night wherein 23 turnovers told the story in Wesleyan's loss to Catholic, the Cardinals set the tone from the jump and finished with just nine turnovers in the 40-minute contest on Saturday. As a team, Wesleyan shot 50 percent from the floor (35-for-70) and hit 10 three-pointers on 22 attempts (45.5 percent).

After opening the year with a seven-point game against Catholic last night, Felecia Fongemie '27 didn't shy away from the ball as she canned three triples in the first quarter, going 3-for-4 from distance in the frame, to help give Wesleyan a 22-16 edge after one. The sophomore duo of Fongemie and Jones combined to score 15 of the team's 22 points in the first.

The two sides played a back-and-forth second quarter with the lead never growing more than 11 points in Wesleyan's favor while the Seahawks could only cut the deficit to as few as five before halftime sounded with Wesleyan leading 44-35.

Jones shined in the third quarter, scoring 10 points and on three more Cardinal baskets in the frame as Wesleyan opened a 16-point lead with 49 seconds left in the quarter following a Fongemie make from distance coming off a Jones assist.

Carrying a 70-57 lead into the fourth quarter, the Cardinals opened up their largest lead of the game following an Olivia Quinn '26 jumper with 8:08 remaining that made it 77-57 Cardinals. St. Mary's closed the deficit to 11 points on two occasions down the stretch, but wouldn't get closer until the final minute as Wesleyan finished off the 88-78 win.

Fongemie netted 21 points on 8-for-15 shooting (4-7 3FG) as she tallied her third career 20-point game. Quinn finished with 16 points (4-7 3FG), nine rebounds, and three assists in 32 minutes. Chika Oyigbo '26 scored eight of her career-high 12 points in the fourth quarter, finishing 6-for-12 shooting with five rebounds. Maggie Smith '25 totaled seven points and seven rebounds while Meghan Kirck '28 had six points and four assists with no turnovers.

The Cardinals are off until next Saturday when they travel to Western New England in Springfield, Massachusetts for the Hampton Inn Holiday Classic. Wesleyan opens the tournament with a showdown against SUNY Geneseo at 6 PM on Saturday. The Cardinals will then take on either Saint Joseph (CT) or WNE on Sunday.
