Wrestling Dominates Trinity, Landing a 34-10 Home Win over the Bantams

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – In a rare fall semester dual meet, the Wesleyan wrestling team dominated their NESCAC counterparts in a 34-10 home win over Trinity on Saturday afternoon from the Bacon Field House. The Cardinals landed wins in eight of the 10 varsity bouts, including five by either tech fall or pinfall to capture the 24-point victory. Opening at 174, Andrew Maiorini '25 landed a crucial go-ahead takedown with just under 10 seconds remaining to score a comeback win over Tucker Vician by decision, 11-8, to set the tone for the day.

In a low-scoring bout at 184, Joe Colon '25 led 3-0 throughout until the closing seconds when he made a quick move to land a pin with just 21 seconds remaining to defeat Cooper Kelley.

Aris Dashiell '25 thoroughly dominated Dylan Sofield at 197, just missing a pinfall on a couple occasions, but still landing a 21-0 tech fall win to put Wesleyan up 14-0.

Trinity answered back with a tech fall win at 285, but Chris Hong '27 responded with a 13-2 major decision win at 125 over Alex Schaeublin in a match that Hong controlled throughout.

The Bantams landed another tech fall fin at 133 courtesy of Matthew Carrozza, making it an 18-10 score with four bouts left.

Hayden Myers '27 turn the tables on Daniel Echeverria in an instant as he landed a pinfall with a split-second jujitsu move at the center of the mat as the ref tapped in 1:33 to hand Wesleyan a 24-10 lead.

On the verge of clinching the match victory, Ike Guttentag '26 took center stage against Chris Perry, an NCAA Qualifier at 149. Guttentag trailed 3-2 entering the last quarter and he rode top on Perry for the entire two-minute frame, gaining a crucial riding time point to send the bout into overtime. With Perry being the tired wrestler, Guttentag took advantage with a quick move to gain control, and he worked his way to a match-clinching takedown to win it 6-3 and clinch the match for the Cardinals at 27-10.

Ronnie Christian '28 continued the Wesleyan momentum with a low-scoring 4-2 decision victory over Andrew Pratt at 157 and CJ Shea '25 finished off in style, defeating John Lagana by major decision 15-3 to seal a 34-10 win for Wesleyan at home.

The Cardinals head back on the road for the Doug Parker Invitational on Saturday, hosted by Springfield College.
