MIDDLETOWN, CT. – The undefeated Wesleyan women's soccer team walked away from Jackson Field on Saturday afternoon with a 1-0 NESCAC quarterfinal, overtime shutout over #8 Connecticut College on Homecoming weekend. Setting about the second overtime period scoreless,
Juliette Sullivan '27 sunk the game-winning goal in the 106
th minute to send Wesleyan to the NESCAC semifinal round.
With 106 minutes down and counting and a penalty kick shootout looming in the distance, the gorgeous November weather and a staggering Homecoming Weekend crowd was an afterthought for the 13-0-3 Cardinals (8-0-3 NESCAC). Neither team recorded a goal in 90 minutes of regulation time and one overtime period was not enough.
Flipping the field,
Taylor Hill '28 settled the ball down below the midfield and was able to get a quick cross pass off to
Kerenza Leahey '27 coming down the middle. Sullivan, a sprinter for the Wesleyan track and field team, chased Leahey down to get ahead of the ball and met it inside the goal box where Camels' (5-9-2 overall, 2-7-2 NESCAC) goalkeeper Ella Kahrl was too far out to stop her. Sullivan sunk the game-winning goal, her third of the season, off her right foot and into the left ninety.
The first quality scoring opportunity of the game for the Cardinals went to
Katie O'Connell '25 in the 31
st minute, taking a heavy shot from above the box on the near side. Just as they did on Tuesday night, the Cardinals controlled the pacing of the game and the offensive chances, out shooting the Camels 10-3 in the first half with a 21-5 overall differential. While still fighting possession, the Camels were able to register more scoring attempts than their meeting in the regular season finale. The Camels pressed in the final 10 minutes,
Molly Brumbach '26 making two saves.
Crawling to the 64th minute, the Camels managed to get their only shot of the second half on Brumbach from top center. The Cardinals defense could not stop Caroline Camp and Clare Mulvihill on the play. With 11 minutes to go in regulation, Brumbach punched out a Camels corner kick to keep the ball in play, clearing the way for an O'Connell free kick that sailed just over the crossbar moments later.
The first overtime period ticked by with little fanfare and rolled over into the final 10-minute period that saw the Cardinals skirt into the NESCAC semifinals with a shutout.
Brumbach made four saves, earning her 10
th shutout of the season. Kahrl finished the afternoon in goal with 11 saves for the Camels.
The Cardinals will host #6 Colby College in the NESCAC semifinal round on Saturday, Nov. 9, at 11 a.m. at Jackson Field. #2 Tufts and #4 Amherst will take the field at the conclusion of the Cardinals' game.
