Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Cardinals Victorious Over Salve Regina in Home Opener

MIDDLETOWN, CT. – In front of the Middletown crowd for the first time this season, the Wesleyan women's ice hockey team completed their sweep of Salve Regina University as they put away a 2-1 non-conference victory on Saturday night, in the second of two games this week against Salve Regina from Wesleyan's Spurrier-Snyder Arena.

In the first of an eight-game homestand that will bleed into the new year, the Cardinals came up with the second of two wins over the Seahawks after earning the overtime victory on Tuesday night. Outshooting the Seahawks 32-20, the Cardinals controlled possession for most of the 60 minutes of regulation time. Aiding in the Cardinals' offensive efforts, Caroline Kee '26 led from the faceoff circle with 10 wins on the draw

With a goal at 10:53 of the first period, Dylan Green '26 gave the Cardinals a leg up on the power play to open the scoring. Winning the faceoff after the high sticking call on the Falcons, Kee sent the puck back to Aimee Seppenwolde '26 and down the blue line to Sam Deleo '25. DeLeo, finding Green out right of the goal, makes the cross-ice pass where Green is waiting to snap the puck behind Sydney Baxter.

Scoring her third goal of the season, tied with Green, Amelia Molin '27 notched the game-winning goal at 8:19 of the second period unassisted. Making the most of an egregious turnover by the Falcons, Molin's shot rocketed over the glove of Baxter and into the right ninety. Following Molin's goal, Sami Smith '27 stood rock solid in goal, making five saves on eight power-play shots by the Falcons before the Cardinals were able to respond in kind. Baxter made five saves on six shots on goal in a row.

Dreams of a Cardinal shutout were dashed in the third period by the Falcons at 3:50. On the power play for the sixth time, the Falcons notched their first goal of the game thanks to Riley Esposito from the right faceoff circle.

The Cardinals killed five of the six penalties called in regulation, all of which were aided by Smith in goal. The sophomore goaltender earns her first-career win, making 19 saves. Baxter finished the evening with 30 saves for the Falcons.

The Cardinals return to action on Friday, Dec. 6, when they host Colby for a 7 p.m. NESCAC puck drop.
