Men’s Hockey Unable to Knock Suffolk, 4-2

BOSTON, MA. – The Wesleyan men's hockey team capped their weekend of games with a second loss, falling to Suffolk University on Sunday evening, 4-2, in non-conference action from Suffolk's Emmon's Horrigan O'Neil Memorial Rink.

The Cardinals, by and large, dominated the first period, outshooting the Rams with a 19-7 differential. After a fluke handful of opening minutes that saw most of the Ram's period shots, the Cardinals were unrelenting on goaltender CJ Hapward. The bombardment of the Cardinals attack played in their favor; captain Owen Sweet '25 striking first to open the scoring. Sending the puck around the back of the Hapward, Hayden Hanes '27 followed through to direct the puck onto the stick of Ethan Davidson '26. Davidson's backhanded pass found Sweet at the right post where he was able to shove the puck over the line, his first of the season.

With the second period underway, the Rams built back their early momentum and tied the game at one at 16:40. Ryan Webb's goal was scored on a rebounded save made by Patrick McDevitt '28, Jack Robinson taking the initial shot. Four minutes later the Rams would take the lead with their second goal of the period, Evan England making the final shot. McDevitt's elbow blocked a shot by Jack Kirsher, sending the puck high where it fell for Scott McManus to make the final pass to England out center.

The Cardinals closed the middle period of play with eight total shots against the Rams, forcing Hapward to five saves.

Making the most of the one goal lead, the Rams scored a third of the evening at the halfway point of the final period. Webb scores on a breakaway attempt after catching the puck at the blue line from England. The final goal of the match for the Rams deflected off the stick of Gavin Havens on the power play. Tommy Whitford made the initial shot that bounced off Havens from out above.

Able to finally cut the score in half, Troy Maldonado '28 gave the Cardinals a boost with less than three minutes remaining in regulation. In a two-on-one opportunity, Danny Judge '26 drove the puck in from the neutral zone with Maldonado on his heels at center and managed to make the short pass back to Maldonado at the goal crease.

In goal, McDevitt closed the evening with 27 saves for the Cardinals. In the opposite goal, Hapward finished with 36 saves.

The Cardinals return to action on Friday, Dec. 6, for a 6:30 p.m. puck drop at Saint Michael's.
