Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Cruises Past Worcester State, 78-49

Cardinals grab 53 rebounds, finish +22 in rebounding margin in a lopsided win over the Lancers

WORCESTER, Mass. – Leading by as many as 37 points in this one, the Wesleyan men's basketball team put on a dominant display in a 78-49 road win over Worcester State on Tuesday night from Brissette Court. The Cardinals remain unbeaten, improving to 7-0 for the first time since the 2017-18 season, while the Lancers fall to 2-6.

A three-point make from Fritz Hauser '26, followed by a driving layup from Shane Regan '25 on the first two Cardinal possessions set the tone for the night. Just three minutes later, Wesleyan hit Worcester State with a 22-3 run to open a 20-point first half lead just 12:35 into play. In that stretch of 7+ minutes of play, Wesleyan held the Lancers to an 0-for-9 showing from the floor.

Nicky Johnson '25 connected from deep in the closing minute, giving Wesleyan their largest lead of the half at 44-19, before closing out with a 44-22 lead at halftime.

The two sides traded baskets for the first 8+ minutes of the second half before Wesleyan held the Lancers scoreless for almost eight straight minutes, utilizing a 12-0 run to increase their lead to 75-38. Worcester State missed seven straight field goal attempts while the Cardinals forced four turnovers in that span of 7:56.

Both teams emptied their benches late in the contest as 13 Cardinals scored at least two points in a lobsided win for Wesleyan.

One of the key stats in this one came on the glass as the Cardinals finished +22 (53-31) in rebound margin. Of those 53 total rebounds, 23 were offensive boards for Wesleyan, compared to six for the Lancers, which translated into a 23-4 advantage in second chance points. Since the start of the 2021-22 season, Wesleyan has grabbed 23 offensive rebounds in a game just one other time, and it's the highest single-game total since the Cardinals finished with 28 offensive boards against Pine Manor back on January 25, 2020.

Four Cardinals hit double figures in scoring, led by Regan and Johnson who both totaled 15 points. Sam Pohlman '26 finished with 11 points, six assists, and five rebounds while Ben Lyttle '27 had 10 points and eight rebounds. Jackson Cormier '26 grabbed 12 rebounds (five offensive) in just 10 minutes of action, finishing just one shy of his career-high.

The busy week continues on Thursday as the Cardinals hit the road for a non-conference title at Lasell with tip-off set for 7 PM.
