Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Fongemie’s 26 Points Not Enough as Women’s Basketball Falls to Salve Regina, 75-63

MIDDLETOWN, Conn.Felicia Fongemie '27 scored a game-high 26 points, finishing just two shy of matching her career-high, but it wasn't enough as the Wesleyan women's basketball team were defeated by Salve Regina 75-63 on Saturday in the Courtyard by Marriott Classic finale. Wesleyan falls to 4-4 on the season while the Seahawks improve to 6-4.

A back-and-forth first quarter saw neither side lead by more than three points in a frame that featured five ties and six lead changes. Fongemie had her offense flowing right from the jump, as the sophomore scored eight of Wesleyan's 16 points in the stanza.

The Seahawks began to take control of this game with a 10-0 run in the second quarter as the two Neary sisters Sofia and Briana combined for eight points in that scoring run. Wesleyan cut into the lead, getting to within six with 2:05 left before half, and two buckets in the final 30 seconds made it just a five-point deficit at the half.

The Cardinals came out of the halftime locker room and found some offense, scoring 10 points in less than four minutes as Fongemie and Olivia Quinn '26 combined to score all 10 points in the early stages. That spurt, however, was followed by a great late spell from Salve as the visitors score seven unanswered points in the final 2:16 of the frame to take a 62-47 lead into the fourth quarter.

Salve added five points points to start the fourth, extending their lead to 67-47, and putting the game to bed as the margin remained at least 16 points until the closing minutes.

Fongmie kept Wesleyan in the game, shooting 10-for-16 from the floor on her way to the 26-point effort. Quinn added 12 points, five rebounds, and three blocks while Alli Jones '27 finished with six points, nine rebounds, and two blocks.

Wesleyan looks to regroup over the next three weeks before a return to action on Monday, December 30 with a trip to Smith College for the Smith Holiday Tournament. The Cardinals open with a neutral site showdown against Roger Williams before taking on Oswego State in another neutral stie clash on Dec. 31.
