MIDDLETOWN, CT. – As the Wesleyan men's ice hockey team celebrated their nine seniors,
Owen Sweet '25, led the team with his seventh goal of the season, against Colby College in a 4-1 NESCAC loss on Saturday afternoon from Spurrier-Snyder Arena.
With less than a second remaining in the second period, the Cardinals (5-16-1 overall, 3-12 1 NESCAC) were called for a holding minor that forced them to start the final period of the game down a man.
DJ Dixon '24 took the opening faceoff of the third period and won the draw, allowing
Vaclav Hes '24 to quickly battle the puck into to the Mules (8-11-3 overall, 4-9-3 NESCAC) defensive zone. Hes made the short pass to Sweet out on the right side before sailing the puck low over the goal line.
John McElaney net the first goal of the game for the Mules at 13:37 of the second period as both teams were held scoreless through the first 20 minutes of action. Jayden Grier scored a power play goal at the eight-minute mark as the Cardinals were called for two many men on the ice. At 6:27 McElaney scored his second of the game and the third goal for the Mules in the second period.
Grier would score the final goal of the game at 15:20 of the third period to finish off the 4-1 win for the Mules.
Sweet finished with five shots on goal as Dixon led the Cardinals from the faceoff circle with 10 draw wins.
In goal,
Marc Smith '24 finished the afternoon for the Cardinals with 26 saves. Andy Beran made 31 saves for the Mules.
The Cardinals return to action on Friday, Feb. 16, when they host Trinity in NESCAC action with puck drop at 7 p.m.
