HARTFORD, CT. – Facing a season-high 61 shots on goal, senior goaltender
Marc Smith finished with 59 saves in net for the Wesleyan men's hockey team, setting a new regulation saves record, as they were shut out 2-0 by No. 6 Trinity College on Saturday afternoon in the final game of the season, from Trinity's Albert Creighton Williams Rink.
Tonight's 59 saves are a new program record for the Hanover, Mass., native, for the most saves in regulation by a single goaltender as he held down the final line for the Cardinals on a season-high 61 shots on goal from the Bantams. Smith previously held the regulation saves record of 49 saves, set on Dec. 2, in a 2-0 loss to Hamilton, where he faced 51 shots on goal. Tim Sestak '20 holds the program record of 65 saves in a single game, but the March 2019 matchup against Amherst ended in triple overtime.
The Cardinals came away with a season-high 27 blocks, the defense combing for 14 of those blocks while
DJ Dixon '24 led the way with five blocks on his own.
With the Cardinals called for a high-sticking minor, the Bantams (20-3-1 overall, 16-1-1 NESCAC) broke open the scoring on the power play with a goal from John Campomenosi at 9:37 of the first period. Facing 23 shots, the first 20 minutes of action were Smith's busiest.
The final goal of the game for the Bantams came at 8:41 in the final period, with Devan Tongue finding the back of the net.
From the faceoff, Dixon won 17 draws, his second-highest win total of the season.
At the opposite end of the ice, Devon Bobek made 16 saves for the Bantams.
The Cardinals close out the regular season with a final 5-8-1 overall record as they went 3-14-1 in the NESCAC. Dixon finishes the season as the scoring leader with eight goals and an additional six assists for 14 points. Dixon finishes his career as a Cardinal with 18 goals, 15 assists, and 33 points.
Owen Sweet '25 led all Cardinals with 18 points, putting up 11 assists and seven goals.
Ethan Davidson '26 finished the season with a team-high 13 assists.
In goal,
Erik Voloshin '24 totaled a 2-9-1 record, making a career-high 433 saves and a .902 save percentage. Voloshin ends his career with the Cardinals at 15-19-2 overall, and 1,108 saves. Smith went 3-7-0 this season, making 314 saves with a .905 save percentage. Smith's career record as a Cardinal stands at a final 14-15-4 and 846 saves.
