MIDDLETOWN, CT. – With the game tied up at two, the Wesleyan women's hockey team stood ten toes down on No. 9 Trinity College with a two-man advantage before
Brigitte Goeler-Slough '23 angled the puck over the line from behind the goal post to take home the 3-2 NESCAC victory on Senior Day, Saturday afternoon from Spurrier-Snyder Arena.
In the second of a weekend series with the Bantams (15-6-2 overall, 8-6-2 NESCAC) to close out the regular season,
Christina Tournas '25 opened the scoring for the Cardinals (12-9-3 overall, 7-7-2 NESCAC) at 4:37 of the first period on her own rebound. Goeler-Slough, with possession at the blueline, chipped the puck back behind the goal where
Caroline Kee '26 was able to free it after a battle at the end boards. Tournas snagged the loose puck and took an initial shot on Hannah Leclaire before popping the puck over the line at the left post on the rebound.
With less than 20 seconds remaining in the first period, Emma Robertson tied the game up at one to get the Bantams on the board.
At 15:54 of the second period, Anne Levia gave the Bantams their first lead of the game, now up by one with a power play goal as the Cardinals were called for a roughing minor. The Bantams would hold the lead heading into the third period before Kee would score her own power play goal in a game that was now being played on man-up opportunities.
Two and a half minutes into third period, Kee struck for the Cardinals as the Bantams were called for tripping.
Jenna Stevens '24 fired a shot on Leclaire from the high point of the Cardinals power play unit, but the shot went wide for Kee at the post. Kee's low shot deflected off Leclaire, angling itself inside the post and over the line.
Goeler-Slough's game-winning goal would come at 4:28 with the Bantams down two players for tripping. Kee took the first shot on Leclaire from the left circle, but Leclaire made the save, kicking the puck wide. Goeler-Slough fished the puck from the end boards and angled it inside the right post from behind the goal to close out the game.
In what was one of
Rei Halloran's '23 finest performances in goal for the Cardinals, the graduate goaltender made 38 saves on the Bantams. With the clock ticking down in the third period, Halloran lost her stick in front of the goal but managed to come away with all three saves faced before the final horn sounded.
From the faceoff circle, Kee led the Cardinals with 11 draw wins. The Cardinals penalty kill closed out seven of the Bantams eight power plays.
The Cardinals return to action in the NESCAC Championships on Saturday, Feb. 24, as the No. 6 seed. Puck drop and opponent to be determined.
