MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Trailing by just two points early in the third quarter, the Wesleyan women's basketball team saw Williams rip off a 19-4 run that proved more than enough to hand the Ephs a 73-62 road win in Silloway Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals (10-10, 1-7 NESCAC) have lost six straight league games while Williams (10-13, 2-7 NESCAC) keeps their postseason hopes alive with a much-needed victory.
It was a game defined by large scoring runs as Williams rode a 12-0 spurt over the course of just over two minutes to turn what was a tied game into a 22-10 lead late on in the first quarter.
Facing a double-digit deficit entering the second, Wesleyan responded with a blistering 3+ minute stretch as the Cardinals scored 15 unanswered themselves to take a 27-24 lead. Six Cardinals scored in that 15-0 run which featured points on six straight Wesleyan possessions, capped by an
Alana Jones '24 three-point play.
Felicia Fongemie '27 hit a three-pointer late on in the second quarter, giving Wesleyan their largest lead of the game at 30-26, but the momentum swung once again as the Ephs scored nine unanswered to retake the lead going into halftime.
Williams piled on in the third quarter, rattling off a 19-4 run to lead 55-38 with 3:49 left in the stanza. The Ephs continued to add to their advantage, going up by as many as 20 before the end of the frame, as it was 60-42 Williams heading into the fourth.
Even though Wesleyan had another 20-point quarter in the fourth, thanks to 14 made free throws, the Cardinals were unable to trim the deficit any lower than 11 points as the Ephs walked away with the road league win.
The Cardinals went 23-for-29 (79.3 percent) from the free throw line for the game.
Alana Jones went for a season-high 15 points (4-9 FG, 7-8 FT) with four rebounds, three assists, and two steals, leading the Cardinals in scoring.
Olivia Quinn '26 finished with 14 points and five rebounds while Fongemie totaled 13 points, five rebounds, four assists, and two steals.
Williams was led by Arianna Gerig who stuffed the stat sheet with 20 points, eight rebounds, six assists, four steals, and two blocks. Mairi Smith went 8-for-9 from the floor on her way to 17 points, six rebounds, three assists, and two blocks. Tatum Leuenberger netted 12 points to go along with 13 rebounds and four assists for a double-double.
Wesleyan completes the regular season at home next weekend with games coming against Tufts on Friday at 7 PM and Bates on Saturday for Senior Day at 3 PM.
