Evan Diaz Walks it Off in Game 1; Cardinals Complete Sweep of Augsburg

Wesleyan overcomes five-run deficit in game one, improving to 3-0 on the season

TUCSON, Az. – After storming back from five runs down, completing the comeback on an Evan Diaz '25 walk-off in game one, the Wesleyan baseball team finished off the doubleheader sweep of Augsburg with a 10-2 game two victory. Wesleyan (3-0) has won three straight games to start their annual spring break trip in Arizona while the Auggies (0-8) remain winless in 2024.

Not much was going right for the Cardinals to start game one, with the offense going hit-less for the opening three innings, but AJ Karabenick '24 allowed just one run in in that span to keep the score close. Augsburg then opened for a three-run fifth inning, plating all three with two outs, to extend their lead to 6-1.

Wesleyan's comeback started with James Marsden '26 smacking a leadoff triple in the bottom half of the fifth, coming around on a Matt Halas '24 sacrifice fly to lower the deficit to four. After getting the Auggies to strikeout with the bases loaded in the top of the fifth, Dariusz Lukowski '27 followed that up with a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the sixth.

The Cardinals drew closer with Marsden again coming up big, driving in two runs on a double to center with two outs, as Wesleyan trailed 6-4 heading into the seventh.

Ned Shapiro '26 induced an inning-ending double play in the top of the seventh, setting the stage for the Cardinals who again had to come through with two outs. Ernie Little '26 doubled to right with one out and came around on a Cole Torino '24 triple to make it 6-5. Tyler Cosgrove '25 drove in Torino on an RBI groundout to short, tying the score at 6-6.

With two outs and no runners on, Connor Sullivan '26 kept the inning alive with a single to left. Christian Boudreau '25 entered for Sullivan as a pinch runner and a wild pitch advanced him to second. On a 3-2 pitch, Diaz hit a liner that made it past the Augsburg shortstop and Boudreau used his speed to round third and slide in safely at home, plating the walk-off game-winning run.

Marsden, Little, Torino, and Diaz all finished with two hits apiece while Diaz added two walks as he reached base safely in all four plate appearances. Shapiro picked up the win in relief, earning his first career victory in game one.

David Tirrell '25 was the story in game two, as the lefty tossed 5.2 innings, allowing just two runs (one earned) with five strikeouts, exiting in the sixth with Wesleyan leading 4-2. Joey Light-Rake '25 entered in relief in a big spot with the bases loaded and two outs. The righthander proved up to the task in the end, inducing an inning-ending lineout to shortstop.

The Cardinals broke the game wide open in the top of the seventh. Wesleyan batted around in the inning, plating six runs on just two hits, as the Cardinals made the most of three walks and two hit-by-pitches in the frame. The bases loaded with no outs as Boudreau was hit by a pitch, Little singled to left, and Torino hit a bunt single. Diaz and Marsden drew consecutive walks to plate runs before Jack Nally '24 was hit by a pitch and Halas walked as it was 8-2 Cardinals. Another run came in on a wild pitch and Luke LaSaracina '25 made it 10-2 with a sacrifice fly to shortstop.

Oliver Dmochowski '27 finished the job in the seventh as the first-year made his first career appearance with the bases loaded and one out. Dmochowski proved more than capable in closing the door, striking out the final two batters of the game to finish off the 10-2 win.

Marsden jacked his first career home run in the second inning, hitting a deep fly ball to right center that lofted over the fence and out. He finished the game with 3 RBI and two runs scored. Little had his second two-hit game of the day while Boudreau went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored. Diaz also scored twice and hit a triple.

The Cardinals enjoy an off day before returning to action on Wednesday with games coming against Hamline at 9:30 AM (PST) and Augsburg again at 1:00 PM (PST) at the Kino Sports Complex.
