CLERMONT, Fla. – The Wesleyan softball team got back in the win column in game two of Friday's doubleheader, as the Cardinals defeated Mount St. Mary 10-2 in five innings after losing to Lasell 6-3 in game one. That win for Wesleyan (3-5) put an end to a four-game losing streak for the Cardinals.
Â
Game one saw Lasell build a 5-0 lead after three innings and held off a late rally bid to defeat the Cardinals 6-3. Wesleyan's offense struggled to get anything going against Lasell's starting pitcher Eryn Sheeley who went four innings, allowing just two hits and one unearned run. The Laser offense gave her plenty of support with a two-run 1
st inning and a three-run 3
rd inning.
Â
Wesleyan plated one run in the 4
th inning and went for two more in the 5
th as
Lizzie Marino '25 hit an RBI double to center that scored
Waverly Smart '27.
Cat Palmer '26 late came through with a two-out RBI single to left that cut the deficit to 5-3.
Â
Lasell, however, answered back with a run in the bottom of the 5
th, and the Cardinals had a chance to make it a game in the 6
th as
Darlene De La Cruz '25 led off with a walk and
Revi Brown '23 singled to right.
Rebecca Cassel-Siskind '26 hit a sacrifice bunt to move both runners into scoring position, but two straight outs put an end to the inning as the Lasers closed out the 6-3 win.
Â
Isabella Secaira-Cotto '25 pitched well in relief, allowing just one run on three hits with no walks and two strikeouts in 3.1 innings.
Â
The Cardinal offense came to life in game two of the doubleheader, as Wesleyan plated three runs in the 4
th before a game-ending 7-run 5
th inning where Secaira-Cotto's two-out RBI bases loaded walk served as the walk-off winner.
Â
It was very much a pitcher's dual early, as
Kelly Baker '26 threw her best outing of the season, allowing no hits or run over the first four innings. She allowed just two base runners in that span while retiring eight straight batters between the 2
nd and 4
th innings.
Â
The Wesleyan offense was slow to get going, but shot to life in the 4
th as
Nicole Celi '27 belted her first career home run. The two-out bomb over the center field fence was a three-run shot, scoring
Jordynn Killion '27 and Palmer to make it 3-0 Cardinals heading into the 5
th.
Â
Mount St. Mary got back into the game with a two-run homer in the 5
th, but the Cardinals put the game away in the bottom half with a seven-run frame. Wesleyan managed all seven runs on six hits, none of which went for extra bases. After two runs scored on an error, Killion came through with a two-run single to left to make it 7-2. Two batters later, the bases were loaded for Marino who slapped a two-run single to right.
Molly Lennon '26 later walked, again loading the bases for Secaira-Cotto with two outs and the junior walked on five pitches to give Wesleyan the 10-2 mercy run rule victory.
Â
Four Cardinals had multi-hit games including Killion, Palmer, Secaira-Cotto, and Smart, while eight of the nine batters in the lineup had at least one hit. Killion went 2-for-3 with a double, 2 RBI, and two runs scored. Palmer went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, Secaira-Cotto finished 2-for-3 with 1 RBI, one run scored, and one walk, while Smart finished 2-for-4 with one run scored.
Â
Baker picked up her first win of the season, going all five innings and allowing two runs on three hits with two walks and one strikeout. Â Â
Â
Wesleyan is off on Saturday before returning to action with a Sunday morning doubleheader against St. Lawrence (9:15 AM) and Western New England (11 AM).
