James Marsden '26 homers for the fourth straight game; Wesleyan is 6-0 for the first time since 2015

TUCSON, Az.James Marsden '26 continued his torrid start to the season, homering in the fourth straight game, leading the Wesleyan baseball team to a 13-9 win over Hamline on Saturday from the Kino Sports Complex. Wesleyan improves to 6-0 on the young season, marking the best start to a campaign for the Cardinals since 2015.

Marsden came into tonight's contest ranked second in the nation in slugging percentage and after going 3-for-5 with two triples and one home run, Marsden's 1.455 slugging percentage sits atop the national leaderboard across all three NCAA Divisions.

Wesleyan's offense stayed consistent throughout the night, scoring in all but one inning, while totaling 13 hits. The high-scoring affair saw the game tied 9-9 after five innings and then Dariusz Lukowski '27 shut down the Piper offense, allowing just three hits and one run with no walks and three strikeouts in five innings in relief, the last four of which were shutout frames. Lukowski picked up his first career win in just his second career outing.

Hamline opened the game with a two-run 1st inning, but Marsden came through with a two-out two-run triple in the bottom half, evening the score at 2-2. The Pipers plated one run in the 2nd, only to see the Cardinals hit right back with two more runs in the bottom half.

The Cardinals got a leadoff home run from Marsden in the 3rd, the sophomore's fourth homer of the season, all coming in the last four games. Jack Carpenter '25 tripled in the next at-bat and with the bases loaded, Matt Halas '24 had an RBI single and Ernie Little '26 added a two-out RBI single later in the frame that put Wesleyan ahead 7-3.

A five-run 4th inning for Hamline saw the Pipers retake the lead at 8-7, but the Cardinals continued to hit back, plating two more runs in the inning. Marsden drove home Tyler Cosgrove '25 on a triple and Luke LaSaracina '25 had a run-scoring single as the Cardinals led 9-7 after four.

Leading 10-9 entering the 7th inning, Wesleyan tacked on two insurance runs as Little scored on an errant throw from the right fielder after Cole Torino '24 doubled. Connor Sullivan '26 later hit an RBI triple that scored Torino, making it 12-9 after seven.

Hamline opened both the 8th and 9th innings with the leadoff batter reaching via an error, but Lukowski proved up to the task, retiring the next three batters in both innings to pick up the win. Halas tacked on another run in the 8th on a suicide squeeze play that scored LaSaracina from third.

Marsden's incredible start to the campaign has the sophomore batting .500 (11-for-22) with nine of his 11 base hits going for extra bases including four triples and four home runs with 17 RBI.

Recording two hits on the night for Wesleyan was LaSaracina who went 2-for-4 with a double, 1 RBI and two runs scored, Sullivan finished 2-for-3 with a double, triple, 1 RBI and one run scored, while Torino was 2-for-5 with one double, 1 RBI and two runs scored.
