Men’s Tennis Suffers Loss in Spring Opener at No. 16 Amherst, 7-2

AMHERST, MA. – A trio of Ben Mitchell '24, Harry Collomb '26, and Chase Kasday '26 put away points for the Wesleyan men's tennis team as they fell in NESCAC action to No. 16 ranked Amherst College, 7-2, in the spring NESCAC opener on Saturday afternoon from Amherst's Tennis Courts.

RESULTS

The No. 2 doubles pairing of Collomb and Kasday pulled out the first win of the afternoon for the Cardinals as the duo defeated Amherst's Marshall Leung and Sujit Chepuri in a quick 8-3 victory. In the No. 1 doubles matchup, Mitchell and JT Bilski '26 took Kobe Ellenbogan and Andreas Sillaste down to the wire, but the Mammoths ultimately won, 8-6. The Mammoths again took the No. 3 matchup against Harry Portnoy '24 and Max Lustgarten '25 as the pair were defeated, 8-5, by Ed Opie and Rex Harrison.

In the No. 3 spot, Mitchell had the lone singles match win of the afternoon for the Cardinals, as he forced a third set tiebreaker against Ellenbogan. Ellenbogan took the first set 6-1, but Mitchell put away a 6-0 second set before coming away with the 6-2 tiebreaker win. Kasday also forced a third set at No. 5 as Harrison took an early lead with a 7-6 set win before Kasday came back in the second set with a 6-3 win. Harrison would win the match with a final 6-0 tiebreaker. The Mammoths would go on to also win the No. 1, No. 2, No. 4, and No. 6 singles matches.

The Cardinals return to action on Sunday, March 9, when they head to Hamilton for a 10 a.m. NESCAC matchup before heading out to San Antonio, TX for Spring Break play.
