Pitching Staff Combines for Five-Hitter, Leading Baseball Past Westfield State, 9-2

Cardinals plate four runs in the 3rd and five in the 7th in the win over the Owls

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Four Cardinal pitchers combined for a five-hitter, while the offense produced a four-run 3rd inning and five-run 7th, as the Wesleyan baseball team cruised to a 9-2 win over Westfield State on Wednesday night from Dresser Diamond. Wesleyan (16-4) avenged a 13-10 defeat to the Owls (15-8) from last season with tonight's win.
 
Westfield State took a 1-0 lead in the 2nd inning but it could have been a much larger deficit if Wesleyan's starting pitcher Joey Light-Rake '25 didn't escape major trouble in the 1st. The first three Owl batters reached base and needing to escape the bases loaded situation, Light-Rake got the Westfield State cleanup hitter to strike out swinging before inducing consecutive pop outs to end the inning with no runs allowed.
 
The Cardinal offense came alive in the 3rd inning as Christian Boudreau '25 hit a one-out single to left, then later scored on an Ernie Little '26 RBI double to right. With two runners now in scoring position, Cole Torino '24 came through with a go-ahead, two-run single through the left side of the infield. A fourth run later came in as Connor Sullivan '26 lifted a single to right that scored Torino all the way from first as the right fielder allowed the ball to go past him on the play.
 
Leading 4-1 after three innings, reliever Ian Appleby '24 continued to mow through the Owl lineup, allowing just one base runner to reach scoring position in his three shutout innings of work. Lucca Frattone '27 came on at the start of the 6th inning and left two runners on-base while the Owls scored one run in the frame on a throwing error in the field.
 
After a 1-2-3 inning for Frattone in the top of the 7th, the Cardinal offense batted around in a five-run bottom half of the inning to build a seven-run lead. The bases were loaded with two outs and Jack Carpenter '25 came through with a two-run single back up the middle before Will Moore '26 also singled up the middle, with one run coming in on an error on the play. The bases stayed loaded for Boudreau who lined a double to left that scored another two, making it 9-2 Cardinals.
 
Frattone finished up his outing with another shutout inning in the 8th before Oliver Dmochowski '27 closed the door with a 1-2-3 9th inning, sealing the win for the Cardinals.
 
Appleby picked up the win, going three shutout innings in relief with just one hit allowed and no walks. Frattone went three innings of two-hit ball, allowing just one unearned run. Dmochowski finished the job, retiring the side in-order with two strikeouts in the 9th.
 
Wesleyan totaled 11 hits in the contest, five of which came from the top two batters in the order. Torino had a huge day at the plate, reaching base in all five of his plate appearances, going 3-for-3 with two walks, 2 RBI, and two runs. Little went 2-for-5 with 1 RBI, one double, and two runs from the leadoff spot. Boudreau went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI and one run.
 
The Cardinals return to NESCAC play with a weekend series at Hamilton. The two sides start on Friday at 4 PM and will play a Saturday doubleheader in Clinton beginning at Noon.
