Cardinals upend No. 5 Williams in 6-3 NESCAC Upset

MIDDLETOWN, CT. – In a stunning performance from the John Wood Memorial Courts on Saturday morning, the Wesleyan men's tennis team put away No. 5 Williams College in a 6-3 NESCAC upset as they handed Williams just their second loss of the season with a No. 3 singles triumph from Brett Keeling '27.

The misty morning weather didn't deter the Cardinals (4-8 overall, 3-3 NESCAC) from the battle facing them in the form of the Top 5 ranked Ephs (10-2 overall, 4-1 NESCAC). Instead, the Cardinals created their own sunshine and swept the Ephs in doubles play to kickstart the NESCAC matchup.

The No. 1 doubles pairing of JT Bilski '26 and Ben Mitchell '24 came away with a 8-5 win against Matt Kandel and Leon Liu. At No. 2, Harry Collomb '26 and Max Lustgarten '25 put up a 8-3 victory over Shawn Berdia and Simon Volkema. Harry Portnoy '24 and Chase Kasday '26 defeated Kush Anand and Andrew Chong at No. 3 with a final 8-4 score.

Mitchell was point four for the Cardinals in the No. 2 singles position, fighting back against Berdia with a final 6-4, 6-2 match win.

The No. 4 singles matchup between Keeling and Volkema was point five and Keeling took set one, 6-4 before Volkema won set two, 6-3, forcing the third set tiebreaker. Refusing to fold, Keeling held his own and came away with the 6-2 tiebreaker win to secure the Cardinals win.

Not to be outdone, Lustgarten at No. 6 was the final point of the match for the Cardinals, winning set one tiebreaker before finishing Chong in a final 7-6 (6-0), 6-4 victory.

The Cardinals return to action on Sunday, April 14, when they host No. 9 Middlebury at the John Wood Memorial Courts beginning at 10 a.m.
