MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The all-time winningest coach in Wesleyan softball history hit another milestone as
Jen Lane recorded her 300
th career win on Tuesday, as her team split a Tuesday non-conference doubleheader against Coast Guard. The Cardinals (11-13) won 8-0 in a five-inning mercy rule in game 1 before falling 2-1 in game 2 against the Bears (8-12).
Â
The Cardinals combined stellar pitching and a five-run 4
th inning to ease past the Bears in game one.
Isabella Secaira-Cotto '25 was outstanding in the circle, allowing just two hits with no walks and three strikeouts, earning a complete game shutout victory. Secaira-Cotto has allowed two earned runs The two hits surrendered is a new season-low for Secaira-Cotto who improves to 6-4 on the season with a career-best 2.26 ERA.
Â
Wesleyan pushed one run across in the 1
st and never looked back, adding another in the 3
rd as
Waverly Smart '27 singled to left to score
Hannah Docktor '24 from second.
Â
After another hit-less frame thrown by Secaira-Cotto in the 4
th, the Cardinals stretched their lead to 7-0 in the bottom half thanks to a five-run, six-hit inning.
Nicole Celi '27 started the hit spree with a double to deep center field that hit off the wall. After stealing third, Celi came in on a Docktor two-out RBI infield single. Docktor then stole second and came around as
Rebecca Cassel-Siskind '26 hit a line drive single to left. The two-out hits kept coming as Smart singled home Cassel-Siskind before
Lizzie Marino '25 went opposite field for an RBI single to right, plating Smart.
Jordynn Killion '27 finished off a streak of five straight RBI singles with a base knock to left that made it 7-0 Wesleyan.
Â
Coast Guard threatened in the 5
th inning, as Bridget Bartz tripled to right field with one out, but Secaira-Cotto made an alert play on the next at-bat. She fielded a sharp grounder from the circle and with Bartz darting for home, she made the throw to
Alexis Amante '26 who withstood a heavy slide from Bartz at the plate, securing the catch and the tag at home.
Â
Wesleyan put the game away in the 5
th as
Cat Palmer '26 reached on an error then stole second. Celi's groundout to second moved the courtesy runner
Bella Tassone '24 to third who then scored on a
Revi Brown '23 RBI groundout back to the pitcher.
Â
Game two was a pitchers dual as
Kelly Baker '26 and Dana Walker both went the distance, combing for just nine hits and three runs allowed. In addition, all three runs were scored on plays that didn't involve hits (two RBI groundouts and a bases loaded walk).
Â
Coast Guard scored both of their runs in the 3
rd inning as three straight singles loaded the bases for Christine Carey who drew a walk, followed by Isabelle Shroyer who grounded out to second to score another.
Â
The Cardinals had a major chance in the 4
th inning as Killion reached on an error before
Molly Lennon '26 singled and Palmer drew a walk to load the bases with no one out. Walker, however, escaped without any damage as she struck out Celi before getting a fielder's choice out at home and a line out back to the circle that finished off the inning.
Â
Baker continued to keep the Cardinals in the game, allowing no runs and just one base runner to reach scoring position in her final four innings of work.
Â
Wesleyan threatened one last time in the 7
th as Marino led off with a single and Smart followed with a base knock to put the game-tying run on second base. Brown came up with an RBI groundout, advancing Smart to third, but that was as far as she would get as a strikeout and groundout sealed the 2-1 win for the Bears.
Â
Baker went all seven innings, allowing five hits and two runs with three walks and two strikeouts. Baker has allowed just two runs in 13 innings in her last two starts.
Â
Smart led the Cardinal offense, going 2-for-2 with 2 RBI, two steals, and two runs in game one and following that up with a 2-for-4 performance in game two. Marino went 2-for-3 with 1 RBI and one run in game one.
Â
The Cardinals are back in action this weekend with a pair of home NESCAC doubleheaders starting with Tufts on Saturday at 1 PM before hosting Colby on Sunday at Noon.
