MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Trailing 6-5 entering the bottom of the 7
th, the Wesleyan baseball team plated five runs in the half inning to lead 10-6 after seven playing against Trinity on Wednesday night from Dresser Diamond. The two sides tried to get the full nine scheduled innings in but darkness set in and forced the game to be called early, handing the Cardinals the victory.
The Cardinals (18-6) and Bantams (11-14) attempted to play the 8
th inning but after the Bantams scored six runs in the top half, the umpires called the game before the start of the bottom half due to darkness as the clock struck 7:15 PM. Because the full 8
th inning hadn't been played, the score reverted to 10-6 in favor of the Cardinals into what is officially scored as a seven-inning contest.
In this non-league, non-conference affair between cross-divisional rivals, Trinity had a big opportunity with bases loaded in the 1
st inning but
Lucca Frattone '27 induced a fly out to left as he escaped with no runs allowed.
Wesleyan made it 1-0 in the 2
nd as
Jack Nally '24 lifted a sacrifice fly to center that scored
Connor Sullivan '26 from third. It was later tied 2-2 after four innings until Trinity got a William Frain home run followed by a Tyler Bernstein RBI single to give the Bantams a 4-2 advantage heading into the bottom of the 5
th.
The Cardinals scored three runs of their own in the bottom half, retaking the lead as runs came in on a
Luke LaSaracina '25 RBI double to left before
James Marsden '26 rolled an RBI groundout to second and
Christian Boudreau '25 hustled home as he stole third and scored on a passed ball.
Back-and-forth the two sides went as the Bantams retook the lead in the 6
th inning, plating two runs to lead 6-5. Wesleyan then had the bases loaded with no one out in the bottom of the 6
th but couldn't get any runs in as
Evan Diaz '25 was thrown out at home trying to score on a fly out to right from LaSaracina.
Joey Light-Rake '25 worked his way to a shutout inning in the 7
th, setting the stage for a five-run breakout inning for the Cardinal bats.
Cole Torino '24 laid a perfect RBI bunt single down the first base line to score Boudreau and tie the score. Diaz drove in the go-ahead run on an RBI groundout and a throwing error scored another. Sullivan then took advantage of the Trinity miscue and sent a two-run shot over the left field fence as his second home run in the past four games made it 10-6 Cardinals.
The Bantams had a big half inning of their own in the top of the 8
th, scoring six runs to take a 12-10 lead, but the half inning lasted almost 30 minutes, which forced the umpires to call the game due to darkness.
Ernie Little '26 led the Cardinal offense going 2-for-3 with two walks, two stolen bases, and one run. Sullivan hit his second career home run while he scored three runs in the win. Boudreau stole four bases and scored two runs.
Frattone went four innings in what was his first career start, allowing two runs. Light-Rake picked up the win for his scoreless 7
th inning.
The Cardinals are back in action this weekend with a trip to Lewiston, Maine where they will take on Emerson on the campus of Bates College on Saturday before playing the Bobcats in a Sunday doubleheader starting at Noon.
