Cardinal Pitching and Connor Sullivan’s Home Runs Leads Baseball to Sunday Sweep of Bates

Wesleyan pitchers combine to allow just two runs in 16 total innings on Sunday

LEWISTON, Me. – Lifted by an incredible day of pitching, combined with home runs in both games from Connor Sullivan '26, the Wesleyan baseball team took both games in a Sunday doubleheader from Bates, winning game one 6-0 (7 innings) and game two 4-2. Wesleyan improves to 20-6 on the season while the Bobcats drop to 11-12.

Three pitchers combined for a five-hit seven-inning shutout in game one. AJ Karabenick '24 picked up the win as he went four innings with four hits allowed in the start. Derek Jann '24 threw a scoreless inning of relief before Matt Spada '26 came on and threw two perfect innings to secure the win.

Two big hits supplied all six runs in game one as Evan Diaz '25 lifted a three-run homer out to left field in the 1st inning while Sullivan cranked a three-run bomb out to left in the 3rd inning.

Neither side got much going offensively in the last two innings, as all four half innings came and went with no baserunner reaching scoring position.

Diaz went 3-for-4 with 3 RBI, account for three of the seven Cardinal hits in game one. Cole Torino '24 went 1-for-3 and scored two runs.

Game two was dominated by the pitching staffs as both teams were very limited offensively in this one. Patrick Murphy '24 was brilliant in four innings of two-hit, shutout baseball in the start, recording five strikeouts with just one walk. David Tirrell '25 entered in relief and went 3.2 inning with two runs allowed on four hits with one walk and six strikeouts. Oliver Dmochowski '27 entered in the bottom of the 8th with the go-ahead run at the plate, and he got Gibby Sullivan to strikeout. Dmochowski retired three straight batters after the leadoff batter was hit by a pitch, as the first-year secured his first career save in the win.

The Cardinals led 1-0 after five innings before Ernie Little '26 made it 2-0 in the 6th as his sacrifice fly to center scored Luke LaSaracina '25 from third. Bates got one run back in the bottom of the 6th on a Keagan Ryan solo home run shot.

Needing some insurance runs, it was Sullivan who stepped up with a two-run homer out to left that made it 4-1 Wesleyan.

Tirrell tossed a scoreless bottom of the 7th to keep the lead at three, but the 8th saw the Bobcats cut the deficit to two and have two runners on with two outs before Dmochowski was called upon, getting the inning-ending strikeout.

Three Cardinals had multi-hit games in game two including Little (2-for-3, 1 RBI), LaSaracina (2-for-5, one double), and Will Moore '26 (2-for-3, one double).

For Sullivan, he's now homered in three straight games as he also went deep in Tuesday's 10-6 win over Trinity in seven innings.

Wesleyan has a busy week ahead with five games starting with a non-conference Tuesday afternoon tilt against Union that begins at 4 PM from Dresser Diamond.
