MIDDLETOWN, CT. – With runners on first and second base at the bottom of the 7
th inning,
Revi Brown '23 stepped up to the plate and nailed a walk-off single to secure a game two victory for the Wesleyan softball team as they defeated Trinity 9-8 to split the afternoon NESCAC doubleheader, falling to Trinity 5-2 in game one on Saturday.
The Cardinals took an early lead in game one as
Nicole Celi '27 stole third prior to
Molly Lennon's '26 RBI single to center field that opened the scoring. With bases loaded after
Isabella Secaira-Cotto '25 singled to left field,
Cat Palmer '26 sent an RBI single to center field for the 2-0 lead.
The Bantams cut the score in half on an error at the top of the 3
rd inning and plated another run in the 6
th inning with bases loaded. The Bantams posted another three runs on four hits in the 7
th, including one on an error at first base.
Jordynn Killion '27 earned a hit on a single to right field, but
Bella Tassone '24 as her pinch runner was left on third base with the final out.
Secaira-Cotto pitched six innings (9 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 1 K) before she was relieved by Brown (1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 K).
Game two became a nail biter in the third inning as the Bantams tied the game up for just the first time of the afternoon as the Cardinals held an early lead to open the game. The Bantams came away with game tying runs in the 3
rd and 7
th innings.
Lennon opened the scoring, nailing an RBI single to right field with
Waverly Smart '27 on third base. With Killion and Lennon in scoring position, Palmer came through with a two-run single to right field.
The Bantams plated three runs at the top of the 3
rd inning, but with bases loaded, pitcher
Kelly Baker '26 put an end to any hope of an early lead with an out at home plate.
Celi doubled to center field for the RBI to give the Cardinals a 4-3 lead. Celi then came around to score as Baker doubled to take a two-run lead. Celi nailed a two-run triple at the bottom of the 4
th inning, her first of two triples on the afternoon.Â
Tied up at eight in the bottom of the 7th, pinch hitter
Ruby Stewart '27 came through with a single for her first collegiate hit to set the stage for Brown's walk-off. Tassone took over as a pinch runner for Stewart at first and advanced to second base on a single from Smart. Pinch hitting for
Hannah Docktor '24, Brown sauntered up to the plate, smacking a walk-off single through the right side as Tassone rounded third and scored at home.
Baker earned the win, pitching all seven innings (13 H, 8 R, 5 ER).
The Cardinals return to action on Wednesday, April 10, when they host Albertus Magnus in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.
