Cardinals shut down Albertus Magnus in afternoon doubleheader

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Snagging a doubleheader sweep, the Wesleyan softball team put on a strong showing against Albertus Magnus on Tuesday afternoon, taking game one in a 6-4 victory before shutting the Falcons out in game two, 6-0, from the Wesleyan softball field. Starting pitchers Isabella Secaira-Cotto '25 and Kelly Baker '26 both pitched complete games.

Molly Lennon '26, who went 3-for-3 in game one, broke open the scoring for the Cardinals in game one, hitting an RBI double with Waverly Smart '27 coming around to score from second base. Smart reached second after leading off with a single followed by a stolen base.

The Falcons responded with four runs on four hits in the top of the 2nd inning, taking a three-run lead over the Cardinals.

Wesleyan's comeback began with Nicole Celi '27 on second base at the bottom of the 2nd, Hannah Docktor '24 stepped to the plate and hit a run-scoring single through the left side to plate Celi and make it 4-2 Falcons.

Legging out an infield single to start the 4th inning, Lennon reached base initially but was tagged out attempting to steal second on the play. Not to be deterred, Cat Palmer '26 stepped up next and hit a single to right. She advanced to second as Celi walked. Secaira-Cotto's single through the right side tied the game up at four, as a costly error by the Albertus Magnus right fielder allowed the ball to roll all the way to the fence.

The bottom of the 5th saw the Cardinals take back the lead as Smart led off with a single up the middle. The next at-bat was Revi Brown '23 with a bunt single, sending the ball between the third baseman and pitcher. Smart and Brown then attempted steals and an errant throw allowed Smart to score all the way from second. Jordynn Killion's '27 RBI single to left center field padded the Cardinal lead at 6-4

Secaira-Cotto closed the door on the win in style, as the junior allowed just two base runners in the 3rd through 7th innings, both of which didn't get beyond first base. She struck out four batters in the complete game win, putting on a clinic in locating her pitches as just one of her 21 recorded outs left the infield. Secaira-Cotto struck out four batters and induced 16 ground outs compared to just one fly out for the game.

Baker made sure game two was a continuation of Secaira-Cotto's final five innings as she allowed only two hits through six innings, striking out four batters. The Falcons managed one hit at the top of the 1st but were shut down for the remainder of the game.

Smart walked on the first at-bat of the inning, reaching second on a Lennon single to right. After Smart and Lennon stole bases, Palmer hit a grounder to short that was misplayed, allowing Smart to score from third. Another Falcon miscue, this time a passed ball, allowed Lennon to score and Palmer to advance to second. The bases were later loaded for Baker, who helped her own caused with walk to make it 3-0 Cardinals.

Another unearned run came in the 2nd inning, making it 4-0 Wesleyan. The Falcons tallied their second and final hit of the game in the 4th inning but that was the only hit of the inning, as Baker kept the shutout intact. In the bottom of the 4th, Smart singled to center field before Bella Tassone '24 laid a bunt down to the third baseman and hustled to second base on the throw. Lennon continued her hot day at the plate with another RBI single to right field and the final run came in on an Albertus throwing error on a steal play.

Neither side looked threatening to score for the remainder of play, with Ella DeCrescenzo '27 closing out the final inning for Baker, striking out one batter in the 7th.

Wesleyan won game two despite recording just four hits as the Cardinals capitalized on six Falcon errors in the seven innings. Lennon went 2-for-4 at the plate, giving her a 5-for-7 day combined in the two games.

The Cardinals return to action on Tuesday, April 16, when they host Coast Guard in a doubleheader at home beginning at 3 PM.
