Macie Carlos Leads Off Cardinals in NCAA Tournament Sweep of Stevens

MIDDLETOWN, CT. – Playing in just their first doubles match this season as the No. 3 pairing for the Wesleyan women's tennis team, Macie Carlos '27 and Alexandra Burnett '27 clinched their morning victory on court three in a delighted daze of emotions, sweeping doubles play as No. 4 Wesleyan cleared Stevens Institute of Technology 5-0 in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday from the John Wood Memorial Tennis Courts.

Carlos and Burnett were the final nail of doubles action for the Cardinals, defeating Isabella Dona and Julianna Gomez 8-2. The Cardinals held the lead through the No. 3 doubles match against the Ducks, after a morning change to the lineup saw the pair replace Renna Mohsen-Breen '25 and Lane Durkin '27.

The first point of the morning went to Leila Epstein '26 and Jackie Soloveychik '26 on court two as the Cardinals' No. 2 pairing, coming away with another 8-2 win over Lorena Piegas and Polina Odintseva. The pair ran six points before the Ducks ever made a dent in the scoring. Point two went to Caitlyn Ferrante '24 and Sarah Youngberg '26 in the No. 1 doubles spot, going 8-2 over Alix Dry and Stephenie Untermeyer. The Ducks managed the first point but could not hold off Ferrante and Youngberg running up the tally.

Facing Odintseva at No. 5, Mohsen-Breen swept with a 6-0, 6-0 final score to bring the Cardinals within one point of finishing off the match. But it was Carlos in Mohsen-Breen's No. 6 spot that clinched the victory for the Cardinals in just her second singles dual match this season. Downing Piegas in a 6-0, 6-0 straight set, Carlos came away with two wins on the day to send the 19-0 Cardinals to the NCAA Sweet 16 round.

As the Cardinals finished the match, Ferrante, Youngberg, Epstein, and Soloveychik were all leading through one set with Epstein one point from winning her own match at No. 3.

The Cardinals will face No. 17 University of Redlands at home on Sunday, May 12, at 12 p.m. at the John Wood Memorial Courts.
