Four Cardinals Score in 4-2 Win for No. 15 Field Hockey Over Roger Williams

Cardinals improve to 10-0 all-time against Roger Williams and 4-0 in non-conference play this season

BRISTOL, R.I. – Three second half goals, including two in the fourth quarter, helped the No. 15 ranked Wesleyan field hockey team defeat Roger Williams 4-2 on the road on Tuesday night from the Bayside Turf Field. With the win, the Cardinals (4-1) bounce back from their first defeat of 2024 on Saturday and improve to 4-0 in non-conference play this season. The Hawks drop to 5-2 on the year.

Depth came in the form of four different Cardinals scoring in the win, including first career goals from Leila Feldman '28 and Teddy Tolbert '28, while Kenzie Kelly '25 had one goal and one assist for a three-point night. Audrey Pace '26 kept the Cardinals in the game, finishing the contest with a season-high 10 saves including seven in the first half.

A Roger Williams flurry at the end of the first quarter was thwarted by Pace and the Cardinal defense. The Hawks had three penalty corners in the final 30+ seconds of the frame, generating six shots including five on-target, that were all turned aside by the Cardinals' All-American goalkeeper.

The Hawks managed to find the first goal of the game just 56 seconds into the second quarter as Emma Sheldon took advantage of a turnover deep in the Wesleyan defense end and slide one past Pace.

Wesleyan ramped up the pressure on offense and tied the score off a penalty corner 5:18 into the quarter. Imani Ochieng '25 inserted to Georgia Adams '26 who passed to Kelly who had her back to goal. Kelly alertly passed to her right where Helen Deretchin '25 was waiting unmarked in the middle. Deretchin placed her shot inside the left post to make it 1-1.

The Cardinal defense held the Hawks goal-less on three more penalty corner chances before the end of the second quarter, keeping the score tied at the halftime break.

After Pace more two early saves to start the second half, Wesleyan had all the scoring chances in the remainder of the third quarter, attempting four shots including the go-ahead goal from Feldman off a penalty corner with 3:36 left in the frame. Deretchin sent a backhand ball off a corner deep in the circle and after a scramble in front, Feldman touched home the goal to put Wesleyan in front for the first time on the night.

Another penalty corner goal came with 5:35 remaining on a similar play to Feldman's marked as Adams took a shot from the top of the circle that was blocked in front. Another scramble for the ball ensuing with another Cardinal first-year, this time Tolbert, getting her stick to it first and knocking home her first career goal to make it 3-1 Wesleyan.

Roger Williams answered right back with a penalty stroke goal from Elizabeth Duquette that made it 3-2 with 4:50 left.

Kelly then restored the two-goal lead for Wesleyan with her fourth goal of the season, intercepting a pass just above the circle and carrying in before taking a quick shot that found its way inside the left post for the insurance marker to give Wesleyan the 4-2 win.

With the win, the Cardinals improve to 10-0 all-time against Roger Williams and help build momentum for a crucial stretch of home games starting this weekend as Wesleyan welcomes No. 8 Bates on Saturday and No. 1 Middlebury on Sunday for a NESCAC home weekend.
