Saeed, Cardinals Shut Out Springfield, 1-0

MIDDLETOWN, CT. – As September's full Harvest Moon rose over Smith Field in a glow of orange aura, the Wesleyan men's soccer team pulled a quick 1-0 shutout over Springfield College on Tuesday night as they were led by sophomore Yousuf Saeed.

The Cardinals remain unbeaten through the first five games of the season, opening 2024 4-0-1 overall with two conference wins in the NESCAC.

Despite the one goal tally, the Pride (1-4-1 overall) did not make the victory easy. From kickoff to the final horn, the Pride played a chippy game at midfield to force the Cardinals back with each offensive surge made.

Awarded a penalty kick in the first half as Saeed was fouled inside the box, the Cardinals finally got the better of the Pride and took the lead. Saeed's shot sailed into the right ninety behind Pride goalkeeper Noah Pote. With just under 10 minutes remaining in regulation, Saeed would get another scoring opportunity on a penalty, this time his shot flying up and over the cross bar.

In another exceptional outing, the Cardinals defense held the Pride to just 10 total shots and only five on goal. Will Geballe '26, Zach Feldman '27, and John SennMcNally '28 ran the zone for all 90 minutes of action.

Mathis Blanc '26 earns his fourth shutout of the season, making five saves in goal for the Cardinals. Pote finished the evening for the Pride with five saves of his own.
The Cardinals return to action on Saturday, Sept. 21, when they host Bates College in a 2 p.m. NESCAC matchup at Jackson Field.
