Cardinals Shut Out by Williams in Second of Weekend Series

MIDDLETOWN, CT. – The Wesleyan women's ice hockey team played host to Williams College on Saturday afternoon in the second of a weekend series of games that saw Wesleyan fall to Williams in a 2-0 shutout from Spurrier-Snyder Arena.

After a 2-1 Friday night loss to the Cardinals (6-7-0 overall, 1-5-0 NESCAC), the Ephs (7-4-0 overall, 1-3-0 NESCAC) opened Saturday's matchup with a goal late in the first period. Taking the one goal lead at 18:47, Sophia Hoppe was the lead off for the Ephs entering the middle period.

Scoreless through the second bout of 20 minutes, the Cardinals managed to gain the man advantage twice as the Ephs were called for both boarding and roughing minors. Gaining momentum with the power plays, the Cardinals controlled the offensive drives for the second period as they put up 17 shots on the Ephs.

It was another late goal that gave the Ephs a two-goal lead to take home the win as they split with the Cardinals through the series. The Cardinals tried to tie the game up at one and pulled Sami Smith '27 from the goal with less than two minutes to go in regulation, but even with the extra skater Chloe Noxon scored goal two on the Cardinals' empty net.

Sami Smith made 45 saves in net while Erin Pye finished the afternoon with 30 saves and the win.

The Cardinals return to action on Tuesday, Jan. 14, when they travel to Endicott for a non-conference matchup at 6:30 p.m.
