MIDDLETOWN, CT. – Cruising past the halfway point of the third period,
Hayden Hanes '27 and the Wesleyan men's hockey team struck down No. 10 Endicott College, 3-2, in a non-conference upset on Tuesday night and held out for the remaining nine minutes of regulation thanks to
Ethan Fehrenbaker '28 in goal to claim their second victory of the season at Spurrier-Snyder Arena.
Knocked down by the Cardinals' (2-8-2 overall) defense through the second and third periods, the Gulls (10-5-0 overall) attempted once again to clear the puck back out of their own zone at the halfway point, but Collin Kleiser whiffed on the clear in the neutral zone, leading the way for
Owen Sweet '25 to pilot the Cardinals on the drive.
Connor Sutherland '27 was on Sweet's heels and connected with the pass back as Hanes made his way up the middle. Hanes' game-winning one-timer sunk over the line with Gulls goaltender Atticus Kelly caught too far out by Sutherland.
Down by two goals in the opening minutes of the second period, the Cardinals' upset comeback began off the stick of
Zach Stimeling '27. Scoring his first of the season, Stimeling wrangled control of the puck off the wall from
Henry Carlson '25 and started on the odd-man rush with
Daniel Lurie '26 and the Cardinals offense. Stimeling's snapshot rang the netting, popping Kelly's water bottle in the process.
Ethan Davidson '26 tied the game up at two just two minutes after Stimeling's goal while the Cardinals held the man advantage with an extra skater. Fighting off three Gulls down in the right corner, Davidson kept possession long enough to make his way out above the crease before landing a heavy shot over the shoulder of Kelly.
The Gulls opened the scoring with a goal from Domenic Garozzo in the first period and would take the two-goal lead at the 15-minute marker of the second period for Ben Jenkinson to score while shorthanded.
Hanes led all Cardinals from the faceoff with eight draw wins and was joined by Sweet with a team leading five shots on goal.
Holding down behind a stellar performance by the Cardinals defense, Fehrenbaker made 34 saves in goal to earn a much deserved first victory as a Cardinal. Kelly made 39 saves for the Gulls. Leading the defense, Lurie finished the evening with three blocks while
Troy Maldonado '28 cleared three shots on goal.
The Cardinals return to action on Friday, Jan. 17, when they host Colby in NESCAC action beginning at 7 p.m.
