MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Trailing by as many as 18 points in the first half, the Wesleyan women's basketball team mounted a comeback bid that saw the deficit close to just one point late in the third quarter, but Hamilton had too much in the end as the Continentals walked away with the 68-61 win on Friday night from SIlloway Gymnasuim.
A slow start to this one saw Hamilton score 10 unanswered points from the opening tip before Wesleyan found some footing in the latter stages of the first quarter to trail 16-11 after one.
Hamilton continued to push forward, using a 13-0 run in the second quarter to take their biggest lead of the game at 31-13 with 3:11 left before halftime. Looking as if the game was going to get away from them, the Cardinals dug in and went on a 10-3 run to close out the first half, heading into halftime trailing 34-23.
After a back-and-forth opening 4+ minutes of the second half, Wesleyan scored eight unanswered, including three-pointers from
Felicia Fongemie '27 and
Pauline Vlahakis '28 to make it a 40-39 game with 1:53 left in the frame. Hamilton came back and scored twice in the final minute, taking a 44-39 lead into the fourth.
In a high-scoring fourth quarter that saw the two sides combine for 46 points, Hamilton looked to have put the game to bed on a Kendall Harris three-pointer that made it 60-50 with just 4:12 remaining.
But another late rally bid followed as seven unanswered points made it a one-possession game with 1:53 remaining. Another defensive stand saw Wesleyan have a chance to tie or take the lead but a turnover proved costly as Taylor Lambo hit a tough shot over traffic down in the paint to make it 62-57 Continentals.
Again trailing by three with 39 seconds left and Hamilton with the ball, the Cardinals played the foul game early and the Continentals proved up to the task, hitting enough free throws down the stretch to ice away a 68-61 road win.
Fongemie led the Cardinals with 16 points (7-16 FG) to go along with five assists and two steals.
Olivia Quinn '26 totaled 13 points, seven rebounds, and three assists while
Tori DaCosta '25 tallied 14 points.
Wesleyan is back in action on Saturday at 3 PM with a home game against Amherst.
