MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Wesleyan men's squash team locked up with Denison in a thrilling match on Sunday afternoon that saw four matches go into a fifth game. In the end, the Cardinals came out with wins in three of those four matches that went the distance, earning a 5-4 win over Denison.
Wesleyan saw
Ethan Yan '25 sweep his match at #4 over Lucas Piller, 11-6, 11-6, 11-9, while Zach Idinopulos '26 came through in four games (11-8, 11-5, 7-11, 11-9) as the Cardinals won both of those matches in under 30 minutes.
Denison came roaring back with wins at the #1, #2, and #3 positions. The Big Red won via 3-0 sweeps at #1 and #2 while
Nimai Kini '26 gave Charlie Fenwick all he could handle at #3, with Fenwick pulling out a close win in four games (8-11, 9-11, 11-4, 8-11).
In the remaining four matches, Denison won the opening two games in three of those four matches, needing two wins to capture a clinching point in the team scoring.
Rafay Khan '28 was first to finish and the first-year staged an epic comeback, winning the final three games 11-3, 11-9, 11-6 to overcome a 2-0 deficit.
Jack Lungstrum '25 was locked in a battle against Ross Falcon in a match that needed extra points to decide three of the five games. After falling 12-10 in both the first and second game, Lungstrum persevered and reverse sweeped his opponent, winning 11-5, 11-7, 13-11 to close out a comeback victory.
Needing just one point to seal the match,
Morgan Shatzman '25 trailed 2-1 in games against Jackson Bragman at #7 before winning the fourth game 14-12 and going on to win the match with a 11-4 triumph in the deciding fifth game. Shatzman's win proved crucial as Denison's Alex DeLuca went on to win his match at #5 in five games, making the final score 5-4 in favor of the Cardinals.
Wesleyan (7-3) heads on the road next weekend and will face Colby on Saturday and Bates on Sunday.
