MIDDLETOWN, CT. – The Wesleyan women's soccer team said goodbye to the regular season non-conference play on Tuesday night with a frenzied 4-1 victory over Rhode Island College as
Maria Utz '27 led the way with a six-point at Citrin Field.
Maria Utz made contact on all four goals. If she wasn't scoring them herself, she was assisting her teammates. With just over 10 minutes of action underway, Utz set up
Riley Buehler '26 on the opening goal. The Anchorwomen (8-4-0 overall), while attempting to clear the zone, could not hold off the Cardinals (7-2-3 overall) demanding access.
Rachel Katz '28 drove the ball in for Utz racing up through the left side, Utz followed with a cross pass across the top of the box for Buehler.
Making quick work of the building momentum, Utz scored her first of the night just two minutes after the Buehler goal. Situated in the thick of the Anchorwomen defense,
Bridget Taketa '29 settled the ball from the far line and crossed through to Utz coming down the middle. Utz landed the shot off her left foot, hitting the back of the night on the high kick.
Allowing another three minutes to run by,
Stefanie Stoj '26 gave the Cardinals a three-goal lead with still 30 minutes remaining in the first half. Taking possession of the ball from Buehler, Utz charged down low from the near line and was able to find Stoj at the goal line to knock the ball behind Oceanna Orlandi. Now with a significant lead and plenty of time to spare, the Cardinals placed
Marley Hansard '29 in goal to play out the remainder of regulation.
Opening the second half, the Anchorwomen caught a break with the first goal of the half to avoid a shutout. Sarah Pimentel's shot from above the box hit the crossbar and fell over the shoulder of Hansard. Undeterred, the Cardinals closed out the match with a final goal from Utz in the 89
th minute. Jumping to keep control of a free kick from the bench line,
Waverly Meyers '26 settled the ball and was able to make the turn, finding Utz waiting in the wings to drive the net one last time as the clock ran out.
The Cardinals outshot the Anchorwomen by a 29-6 overall margin. Pimentel led the Anchorwomen with two shots and a goal.
Hansard earns her second win of the season with one save after relieving
Molly Brumbach '26 in goal. Orlandi and Nicole Nunes combined for 13 saves for the Anchorwomen.
The Cardinals return to action on Saturday, Oct. 18, as they honor the Class of 2025 with an 11 a.m. matchup with Bowdoin.
