MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Scoring early and often in this one, the No. 7 Wesleyan field hockey team pumped in a season-high six goals in a 6-2 win over Conn. College on Tuesday night in the Cardinals' regular season finale. Wesleyan (12-3, 7-3 NESCAC) heads into the NESCAC Tournament winners of eight straight games, the second-longest win streak in team history, and will face Williams in the NESCAC Quarterfinal round on Saturday in Middletown.
Â
Leila Feldman '28 was bombing shots all evening, scoring three times and adding one assist for a seven-point night. Feldman's first career hat trick puts her in select company as she is one of just three Cardinals – joining Diana Schwarz '23 and
Georgia Adams '26 – since 2012 to record a hat trick.
Â
Adams made some history, recording her first career three-assist game to increase her career point total to 105, putting her in sole possession of second place on the all-time career points list at Wesleyan.
Â
The start of this one saw Feldman score just 1:07 into play as
Meera Patel '29 took a pass at midfield and worked her way past the on-ball defender. With open space in front, Patel carried into the Camels' defensive end before sliding a through ball to Feldman who one-touched past the last Conn. defender. Now one-on-one with the goalie, Feldman set up a reverse sweep that she powered inside the right post.
Â
Conn. leveled just over three minutes later as Sadie Gearan broke free on a breakaway, drawing
Audrey Pace '26 off her line and backhanding in the equalizer.
Â
Following that Gearan goal, the Cardinals responded with a dominant showing, scoring five unanswered goals to put this one away early in the second half. Feldman's second goal of the first quarter started the 5-0 run as she received a pass from Adams with her back to goal. She began to dribble towards the center of the circle before stopping on a dime and firing a shot inside the left post, catching out an unsuspecting Isabella Carnall in goal.
Â
Feldman this time played the role of playmaker as she received a pass from
Anna Broderick '27 and worked her way towards the end line, deep inside the Camels' defensive circle. She nudged a centering pass for
Isabelle Benoit '26 who got her stick on the ball before the Camels' defenders, finding the back of the cage for her first career goal.
Â
Taking a 3-1 lead into halftime, the Cardinals made it a three-goal game three minutes into the third quarter when Adams took advantage of all sorts of space, carrying in from midfield before sliding a perfect through ball to Patel inside the circle. Getting Carnall to come off her line, Patel got to the ball first and took one dribble away from Carnall before sliding home her fifth goal of the year to make it 4-1 Wesleyan.
Â
Feldman completed her hat trick less than five minutes later, receiving a pass from Adams and carrying into the circle. With space to shoot, Feldman lined up a reverse sweep perfectly hit with power to Carnall's left and inside the right post.
Â
Teddy Tolbert '28 added another for Wesleyan early in the fourth quarter, receiving an Adams centering pass inside the circle. Tolbert spun around to her backhand side and connected on a reverse sweep to score her fourth goal of the year, making it 6-1 Cardinals.
Â
The Camels saw Sophia Stevens score her first career goal late on, with 1:17 remaining, to complete the scoring and hand Wesleyan a 6-2 win.
Â
Shots favored Wesleyan 26-12 for the game and 10-1 in the first half alone. Wesleyan also held an 8-4 edge in penalty corners.
Â
Shifting the focus to the postseason, the Cardinals play host to a familiar foe in Williams on Saturday in the NESCAC Quarterfinal. The Ephs knocked Wesleyan out of the NESCAC Tournament, 3-2 in overtime, in 2023 and finished off the Cardinals' season last year in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament. Wesleyan defeated Williams 1-0 in Williamstown in the regular season, signaling the Cardinals' first win over the Ephs since 2012.
