Men’s Hockey Falls to Tufts in Season Opener

MEDFORD, MA. -  Facing 37 shots with double-digit first and third periods, the Wesleyan men's hockey team suffered a road defeat in the first outing of the season, falling 4-1 to Tufts University on Friday night in NESCAC action as Wesleyan was led by Jack Marottolo '26 on the power play.

The Jumbos wasted little time making their presence known, outscoring the Cardinals by a three-goal margin across all three periods. Striking first on the powerplay, the Jumbos opened the scoring with a goal from Jonathan Horn. Trace Norwell and Max Resnick would score two more goals in the second and third periods, digging the Cardinals into deep deficit.

Armed with man-advantage as the Jumbos were called for an interference minor, the Cardinals finally caught a break and put an end to a potential Jumbos shutout. Connor Sutherland '27 kickstarted the attack on the Jumbos, Ethan Davidson '26 driving the puck down the middle before crossing out to Marottolo coming down the near boards. Marattolo fired over the glove of Gustave Bylin.

Just past the midway point of the final period, the Jumbos would have the final say and scored a fourth goal, Cole Dubicki putting away a 4-1 victory.

Danny Judge '26 recorded six shots on goal, crushing two per period. On defense, Troy Maldonado was good for five blocks.

In goal, Patrick McDevitt '28 finished the night with 33 saves for the Cardinals. In the opposite goal, Bylin earned the win with 31 saves.

The Cardinals return to action on Saturday, Nov. 15, when they face Conn. on the road at 3 p.m.
