Women’s Soccer Knock No. 21 NYU in PKs, Advance to NCAA Second Round

MEDFORD, MA. – Forcing the First Round matchup of the NCAA Tournament to overtime, the Wesleyan women's soccer team held out through two overtime periods and knocked No. 21 NYU from contention in one-on-one penalty kicks, 1-1, PK 4-3, to advance to the Second Round of the tournament on Saturday afternoon at Tufts University's Bello Field.

It was a scene at Tufts University as the Cardinals took to the field for the fifth straight NCAA Tournament appearance, pulling through to reach the Second Round for the fourth time in five years. The Cardinals, now 9-4-4, bested the Violets in penalty kicks after Riley Buehler's '26 game-tying goal sent the match to overtime. The Cardinals will face NESCAC foe, No. 3 Tufts, for a third time this season in the Second Round on Sunday, Nov. 16, at 1 p.m.

With both 10-minute overtime periods ending without a game-winner, the Cardinals and the Violets prepared for a shootout. Sheridan Snow was the first shot for the Cardinals and made her mark. Zoey Fagnan '26, Buehler, and Lily Jebejian '26 all scored on Violets goalkeeper Demetra Sideridis. Sideridis did not see action during the previous 110 minutes of game play. The Violets were able to get three penalty kick attempts behind Molly Brumbach '26, but Brumbach came up on two stops, earning the victory for the Cardinals.

The Cardinals held the offensive edge over the violets in the first half, outshooting at an 8-4 differential. Both defenses held tight and would enter the half with a scoreless book. Brumbach saw two saves during the opening 45 minutes.

With three minutes underway in the second half, the Violets broke the scoring and took the one-goal lead. Elizabeth Argenziano put the goal away following a corner kick awarded to the violets from the kickoff.

Never to be outdone, the Cardinals doubled down and put up four shots in the minutes that followed the Violets goal, clearing the way for Buehler to strike. Buehler's goal at 68:28 was assisted by Juliette Sullivan '27 and Maria Utz '27.

In goal, Brumbach finished the afternoon with eight saves. Maddy Tohanczyn finished with six for the Violets.
