Women’s Soccer NCAA Tournament Run Ends at Tufts, Closing 2025 Season

MEDFORD, MA. – In a 2-0 shutout on Sunday afternoon, the Wesleyan women's soccer team fell to Tufts University in the Second Round of the 2025 NCAA Tournament, closing the 2025 season with a final 9-5-4 overall record following the program's fifth overall appearance in the tournament.

Catching only a handful of hours of rest between a thrilling penalty kick shootout in the opening round of the national tournament, the Cardinals found themselves facing the Jumbos for a third time this season. While the Jumbos have held an edge to the Cardinals in all three meetings, both teams still reached this post-season moment.

With just under 20 minutes of action underway at Bello Field, the Jumbos caught a break and put the go-ahead goal behind Cardinals goalkeeper Molly Brumbach '26. Aoife O'Reilly was credited with the tally. The goal followed a barrage of shots by the Jumbos just minutes earlier as they managed to keep the Cardinals pinned in their own zone, eventually outshooting the Cardinals 13-3 in the opening half.

The Jumbos swept into the second half where they left off, swarming the Cardinals defense. At 76:33, the Jumbos put away their second goal of the match. Reese Birch scored her 11th goal of the season, lifting the Jumbos to their advancing win. The defense held the Jumbos to just two more shots in the final 15 minutes of regulation. The Jumbos' overall shot differential was 27-5.

Maria Utz '27, the Cardinals' leading goal scorer, powered the offense with three shots. She finishes the season with 10 goals and nine assists for 29 points as she ranked top of the NESCAC. Senior Riley Buehler '26 finishes the season with eight goals and an assist for 17 points in a breakout season.

In goal, Brumbach finished the afternoon with seven saves. Brumbach closes her senior season with an 8-5-4 overall record, including eight shutouts while recording 80 saves. All time, Brumbach is 25-10-13, saving 222 shots and allowing just 33 goals against.

Head coach Eva Meredith concludes her 22nd season with a 141-141-52 standing record.
