Matt Fitzsimons Earns His Second Gold Helmet Award of 2025

Fitzsimons threw for a single-game school record 458 yards in Saturday's thrilling comeback win at Williams

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Wesleyan football junior quarterback Matt Fitzsimons '27 was honored by the New England Football Writers Association (NEFW) with the Week 10 Gold Helmet Award. The Gold Helmet is presented weekly to the highest-performing student-athlete playing in New England at the Division II/III level.

Fitzsimons earns the Gold Helmet award for the second time in 2025, as he previously picked up the honor in Week 6 following a 365-yard, 5 TD performance against Hamilton. The Cardinals' signal caller threw all over the Williams defense, going 29-for-50 for a school record 458 yards and 3 TD in Wesleyan's 34-28 OT win at Williams.

He threw TD passes of 22, 9, and 24 yards, throwing two TD passes in the final 2:48 of the fourth quarter, sending the game into OT after the Cardinals were trailing 28-14. The 458 passing yards breaks a Wesleyan single-game record once held by Zach Canter '07 that had stood for more than two decades as Canter threw for 437 yards against Hamilton in 2004.

The Cardinals (6-2) close out the 2025 season with a NESCAC Championship deciding game at home against Trinity (7-1) at Noon on Saturday.
