Three Cardinals Make Runs to the Finals; Wrestling Places Third at the Doug Parker Invitational

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Wesleyan wrestling team saw three advance to the finals of their respective weight class while six Cardinals placed at the Doug Parker Invitational. With 108 team points, the Cardinals placed third overall out of 13 teams in the field. Among the three finalists on the day for Wesleyan, Hayden Myers '27 was the lone champion as the junior remained unbeaten on the year, taking the 141-lb title. Coming in as the #2 seed, Myers topped Hunter Lundberg of RIC with a pin at 2:16 his first bout of the day. Myers followed with two dominant performances, winning a 18-7 major decision in the quarterfinals over Ryan Kozdra (Springfield) and a pin of the three-seed Tylor Stubbs (Williams) in 2:00 to advance to the final. Wrestling against three-time NCAA qualifier Daniel Haws of Centenary in the 141-lb final, Myers dominated from the jump, finishing a title-winning run with an 8-0 major decision win.

In the 125-lb bracket, the two-seed Chris Hong '27 made a run to the final as he landed a pair of major decision wins in the second round and quarterfinal. Facing a familiar foe in Alex Schaeublin (Trinity), Hong came from behind with a match-deciding takedown with 23 seconds left to land a 7-6 win. Hong was defeated by Chris Colon (Williams) in the final but still landed a runner-up finish.

Ike Guttentag '26 was the third finalist on the day for Wesleyan as the senior wrestled his way to the final, landing an upset of the top-seed along the way. Guttentag opened with back-to-back tech falls before landing a 10-9 decision win over Ty Stewart (Springfield) that saw Guttentag overcome 6-3 and 8-7 deficits. Competing against the top-seed Joseph Innamorato (Centenary) in the semifinal, Guttentag got an early takedown in the first period and that was the end of the scoring as he earned a spot in the final with a 3-0 win.

Back on the mat for the first time this season, Ronnie Christolin '28 had a strong showing on debut, making a run to the semifinals before finishing in fifth place at 157. The sixth placer saw William Maffei '27 land three straight wins in the consolation bracket at 197, including two straight pins followed by a 11-9 decision win, to compete in the fifth-place bout.
