BRISTOL, R.I.  – The Wesleyan wrestling team opened the 2025-26 season with a fourth-place finish at the Roger Williams Invitational on Saturday. The Cardinals had three finalists, one champion, and six total placers on the day while totaling 104 points as a team. Coast Guard took the top spot, followed by JWU and Roger Williams in the team standings.
Coming in as the top-seed in the 141-lb bracket,
Hayden Myers '27 did not disappoint, winning two matches by pinfall and two by major decision in a title-winning run. Myers opened with a pin of JWU's Kiaben Kennedy in 2:21 then defeated eight-seed Kevin Ruland in a 9-0 major decision. Facing off with four-seed Jaiden Hernandez in the semifinal, Myers landed a late pin with 45 seconds left to advance to the title match. Two-seed Kyle Moore from Southern Maine awaited in the title match and it was dominated by Myers, who turned in a 12-2 major decision to sweep aside the competition to open the year.

Chris Hong '27 (125-lb) and
Ike Guttentag '26 (149-lb) both made runs to the finals of their respective weight class. After claiming a tight 10-9 decision win in the round of 16, Hong won by major decision and pinfall in the next two rounds before losing by major decision in the first-place bout. Guttentag landed two major decision wins and a decision victory on his way to the title bout where he fell to the top-seed Nate Fitt of Coast Guard.

Kellen Horst '26 went 3-1 on the day, landing in fifth place in the 157-lb flight. Horst won 11-5 in decision to start his day then landed a 22-9 major decision victory to advance to the semifinal round. After suffering a major decision defeat in the semis of the winners' flight, Horst came back to win 7-4 by decision in the fifth-place bout.

 In the 174-lb bracket, it was first-year
Rinaldo DiGiacopo '29 who made a run in the consolation flight, winning by pinfall in the opening round before defeating the eight-seed and four-seed by decision. Falling short of the third-place bout, DiGiacopo secured fifth-place with a win by forfeit.

Roman Martinez '27 completed the list of placers on the day for Wesleyan as he secured sixth-place at 184-lb behind a pair of decision wins in the championship bracket.

Michael Diorio '29 won a pair of matches in the 285-lb flight, including a 21-4 tech fall triumph in the consolation flight, before bouncing out in a 4-1 decision loss to the three-seed.
Owen Sheiman '29 and
Silvan Unger '29 each picked up a pair of wins in the consolation flight at 149-lb and 165-lb, respectively, in their collegiate debuts. Â
