Fongemie’s Second Half Magic Leads Women’s Basketball Past Conn. College, 65-59

Cardinals outscore Conn 17-12 in the fourth quarter to land a key road win

NEW LONDON, Conn.Felicia Fongemie '27 poured in 15 of her game-high 17 points in the second half, leading the Wesleyan women's basketball team to a 65-59 road win over Connecticut College on Saturday afternoon from the Luce Field House. Wesleyan (8-12, 2-5 NESCAC) breaks a two-game losing streak while the Camels (10-11, 0-7 NESCAC) remain winless in league play.

In a back-and-forth game featuring six ties and seven lead changes, in which neither side led by more than six points, it was the Camels who built up an early 12-8 lead after burying two three-pointers in the early going. Wesleyan managed a response, holding the Camels scoreless over the final 3:02 of the frame, while getting a floater from Fongemie to fall right before the buzzer sounded to tie the score at 12 apiece.

Meghan Kirck '28 buried her first of four triples on the afternoon to give Wesleyan a lead in the first possession of the second quarter. Olivia Quinn '26 then hit from deep before Kirck connected two more times from long range as the duo scored 16 of the Cardinals' 18 points in the second quarter.

Trailing by one at halftime, Wesleyan held steady with Conn for the opening 4+ minutes of the second half before Quinn hit from deep to prolong what was an 8-1 run. Fongemie drove the lane for two straight makes, the second of which giving Wesleyan their largest lead of the game at 42-36.

The Camels answered right back with a 7-0 run, as Avery Burns converted a three-point play then hit from three as the lead then changed hands five more times before the end of the third quarter.

Conn got a three from Catherine Cole to open the fourth and later got a basket from Hayle Thompson to make it 52-50 Camels, but Kirck drained a crucial three-pointer just over a minute later to start a 7-0 Wesleyan run. Baskets from three different Cardinals in a two-minute span made it 59-54 Cardinals, only to see the Camels make it a three-point game with under two minutes left.

Fongemie converted a key three-point play with 1:54 left, only to see Conn answer with a Mia Xerras three as the Camels trailed 62-59 heading into the final minute. Cole hoisted a game-tying three-point attempt that missed, then Fongemie was fouled with 15 seconds remaining, hitting both from the line.

Burns had a last-gasp three come up short and the rebound was secured by Aviva Schnitzer '28, ending the game with Wesleyan securing a 65-59 road win.

Four Cardinals combined for 60 of Wesleyan's 65 total points scored. Fongemie led the way with 17 points while Quinn had 16 to go along with nine rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Tori DaCosta '25 added 15 points, nine rebounds, and three assists and Kirck shot 4-of-8 from distance to go along with six rebounds, and four assists.
