Seniors Shine in Overtime Upset of No. 12 Colby

MIDDLETOWN, CT.  – No strangers to upsetting ranked opponents, the Wesleyan women's hockey team was powered by the six-woman senior class on Saturday afternoon in a 3-2 overtime victory as Sam DeLeo '25 launched the game-winning goal over No. 12 Colby College in front of the home crowd on Senior Day at Spurrier-Snyder Arena.

Celebrating the accomplishments of DeLeo, Caroline Mezias, Shannon Burke, Isabelle Allieri, Christina Tournas, and Effie Tournas, the Cardinals (8-14-0 overall, 3-11-0 NESCAC) were the first to arrive on the scoreboard with just over five minutes of action underway. Driving the attack from the neutral zone, Allieri's goal was scored from the left corner on what looked to be a pass to a teammate, but the puck deflected off the skate of Mules (14-5-2 overall, 7-5-2 NESCAC) goaltender Mandy Busky and fell over the goal line.

With the Cardinals called for a roughing minor, the Mules were awarded the extra attacker and tied the game up at one with less than a minute remaining in the second period with the goal pinned to Courtney Schumacher. Schumacher was not finished and tallied a second power play goal at the halfway marker of the third period while the Cardinals were once again short handed on a hooking call.

Spurred by the urgency of the clock, Christina Tournas forced an overtime period with a game-tying goal and under three minutes to spare. The Cardinals won the offside faceoff in front of the Mules bench and went to work breaking up the attempted zone clear by the Mules to regain possession in front of Busky. Caroline Kee '26, who won the draw, corralled the puck at the near boards and located Tournas as she was flying down the middle for the final snap over Busky's shoulder.

The Cardinals entered the overtime period with the man advantage after a late regulation penalty carried over for the Mules. Kee once again was put to task wrangling the puck as the Cardinals closed in, but it was DeLeo's rocket of a shot from inside the blueline that carried the Cardinals to the overtime upset victory.

In goal for the Cardinals, Jenna Guglielmi '27 finished the afternoon with 32 saves and earned the win. Busky made 26 saves in the opposite goal.

The Cardinals return to action on Friday, Feb. 21 when they host Trinity beginning at 7 p.m.
