MIDDLETOWN, CT. – Rebounding from a five-goal shutout on Friday night in Hartford, the Wesleyan men's hockey team tallied three goals against No. 14 Trinity College on Saturday afternoon in a 5-3 NESCAC loss in their final game of the season from Spurrier-Snyder Arena.
Despite several changes to the bottom half of the lineup in the Senior Day regular season finale, the Cardinals worked out the kinks in their game to put last night's performance behind them. Rallying to put goals on the board as they celebrated Captains
Owen Sweet,
Patrick Morrissey,
Jack Kane, and
Henry Carlson, the Cardinals tied the game four minutes after Alex Mozian scored the opening goal.
Stripping the Bantams of the puck in their own zone, the Cardinals quickly cleared out with
Dallas D'Amato '26 driving the offense down the middle for
Jack Marottolo '26 closing in on the right corner. Marottolo's initial shot on Bantams goaltender Devon Bobak deflected on the save and fell onto
Danny Markham's '28 stick as he was left wide open to Bobak's right side. The goal marked Markham's first goal as a Cardinal.
Following Markham in under a minute, Sweet struck for his 30th-career goal to give the Cardinals their first lead of the game. Winning a battle for the puck on the near boards,
Han Shin's '28 pass from behind the goal found Sweet unattended out center as Sweet's shot fell over the shoulder of Bobak. The Cardinals entered the second period with the one-goal lead.
The second period of the matchup was riddled with goals and penalties alike, favoring the Bantams throughout. While unable to capitalize on six power plays, the Bantams still posted three goals and stole the lead. Richard Boysen tied the game up at two with less than a minute of play underway before Marottolo scored the final goal of the afternoon for the Cardinals, opening a second lead. Quick wall-to-wall passing from Markham and Marottolo was enough for Marottolo's one-timer to fire over the line.
The Bantams closed the door on the game with three unanswered goals by Theo Griffin, Ty Broad, and an empty net goal by Ryan Panico. Bobak earned the win with 22 saves.
Making 30 saves in goal for the Cardinals,
Patrick McDevitt '28 wrapped up his first season as a Cardinal while headlining in goal. He finished the season with a 5-13-2 record, recording 553 saves with a .902 save percentage.
Ethan Davidson '26 led the Cardinals as the season's points leader, finishing with 26 points, 20 assists, and six goals. Sweet finished as the scoring leader with nine goals, 14 assists, and 23 points,
Hayden Hanes '27 finishing second in scoring with eight goals. On the power play,
Connor Sutherland '27 lead the way with three goals. On the defensive side,
Troy Maldonado '28 finished the season with 31 blocks, followed by
Daniel Lurie '26 slowing down 19.
In the NESCAC, Davidson finished second in assists, fifth in assists per game (.83), third in points, and third in points per game (1.08). Sweet finished 10
th in goals, sixth in assists, ninth in assists per game (.58), fifth in points, and ninth in points per game (.96).
