LEWISTON, Me. –
Shane Regan '25 scored 14 of his game-high 22 points after halftime, helping lift the No. 1 Wesleyan men's basketball team past Bates in overtime, 73-67, on Saturday night. The Cardinals (22-0, 8-0 NESCAC) remain the lone undefeated team in the country while the Bobcats (10-12, 1-7 NESCAC) fall out of postseason contention with the loss.
Â
On a night where Regan made history, becoming the 28
th player in team history to score 1,000 career points, the Cardinals had to overcome a particularly tough stretch wherein the team scored just 16 second half points on 6-for-35 shooting and 1-of-11 from three. Despite the struggles on the offensive end, Wesleyan's defense never wavered, keeping the Cardinals out in front in a game that Wesleyan never trailed.
Â
Trailing by four with 58 seconds left in regulation, Bates pulled within two on a Peter Psyhogeos floater in the lane before forcing overtime on a Babacar Pouye jumper near the baseline with just seconds remaining.
Â
With a lively home crowd fully engaged on what was Bates' senior day, the Cardinals set the tone early in overtime as Regan blocked a jumper from Sean O'Learly on the first possession and then the senior drove the lane for a quick layup in transition. Regan continued to attack the rim, getting another bucket to fall on the next Cardinal possession, before a key steal and score from
Nicky Johnson '25 put Wesleyan ahead 65-61.
Â
Bates missed all three of their three-point attempts in the extra session, while the Cardinals went 6-for-6 from the free throw line down the stretch to close out the six-point road win in overtime to remain undefeated.
Â
It was all-Wesleyan in the early going, with the Cardinals scoring nine unanswered from the opening tip. The Cardinals stretched their lead to double figures on a
Jackson Cormier '26 three-pointer and Wesleyan's lead grew to as many as 12 points in the first half.
Â
The Bobcats cut the deficit down to just one point with 4:26 left before halftime but Wesleyan hit back with a 9-0 run with
Oscar Edelman '28 scoring seven of those nine Cardinal points in the scoring spree. Johnson scored twice before the end of the half, making it 42-31 at halftime with Wesleyan closing on a 13-3 run.
Â
The second half was a different story as both defenses took full control of the game. Just 43 combined points were scored between the two teams including a stretch of over eight minutes of play where just four total points were scored.
Â
Regan hit the 1,000 career point mark on the first make of the second half for Wesleyan, a floater in the paint that made it 44-38 Cardinals. Regan's production on offense in the second half carried Wesleyan as he scored 10 of the team's 16 total points in the half.
Â
For the game, Regan went 7-for-16 from the floor and 7-of-9 from the free throw line to go along with two blocks. Johnson finished with 17 points (6-12 FG), five assists, and four rebounds. Cormier totaled 15 points and 17 rebounds for his second straight game with a double-double while Edelman finished with 11 points off the bench. Those four players combined to score 65 of Wesleyan's 73 points.
Â
Wesleyan finished +13 in rebounding against Bates (53-40), grabbing 19 offensive rebounds in total. The Cardinals also hit 85% of their free throw attempts, going 22-for-26 as a team.
Â
The Cardinals hit the road for the final week of regular season play, heading back to Maine for games at Bowdoin on Friday and at Colby on Saturday.
