Little Breaks Steals Record, Cardinals Defeat Augsburg

TUCSON, AZ. – Breaking out the hits for the third game in a row, the Wesleyan baseball team improved their record to 3-5, defeating Augsburg University in the second of the weekend meetings 11-4 as junior Ernie Little broke the program career steals record at the Kino Sports Complex.

Breaking a program record that has stood for nearly 30 years, Little entered this afternoon's game with a career total 65 stolen bases through 74 career games. Working through the bottom of the first inning, Little stole second, tying Josh Pepe's '95 previous career record of 66 before stealing third just a moment later to break the tie at 67. Little stole two more late in the game, setting a continuing precedent for the record to climb as Little still has a plethora of time to go. Last season Little set the single season steals record with 30.

Little was the guiding mark in putting the Cardinals up in the bottom of the first, hitting home with Jack Carpenter '25 on his heels after both stole on walks. Jonah Timmons '27 singled to center field, and it was enough for two runs. Jake Acker '27 put the Cardinals up by three, singling to the catcher as he reached second on an error. Marcus Jang's '26 single to center powered Acker to home.

The Auggies managed two runs at the top of the fifth after Kevin Brown '28 struck out seven batters through four innings before he was relieved by Lucca Frattone '27. James Marsden '26 doubled out center, stealing third with Little behind him after Little was walked. Carpenter brough the Cardinals' lead to three with a single to right field for Marsden and Little to score. Carpenter collected his own run as Evan Diaz '25 hit a triple to the right fielder. As Timmons nailed a sacrificed fly, Diaz ran in run seven.

Opening the sixth, Acker singled to the catcher and advanced to third with Jang hitting his own single to left field. With Marsden back up to bat, Jang and Acker scored on a heavy ground ball to the second baseman.

Luke LaSaracina '25 brough the run total to double digits, scoring the 10th run in the seventh. Firing a line drive to center field, LaSaracina reached third base on a pitching error by the Auggies. Marsden's ground ball to right field gave LaSaracina the go ahead home. Marsden would collect the final run of the game with Little doubling on a fly ball. The Auggies finished the game with two more runs but could not catch the Cardinals' heated tear.

Marsden, one of four Cardinals to score two runs, lead the way on three hits and three RBI. Diaz tripled on each of his two hits.

Brown earned the win, finishing with seven strikeouts and no runs, allowing just two hits. Marking the final two innings, Colin Lautzenheiser '28 struck out two with just a run and two hits.

The Cardinals return to action on Tuesday, March 18, when they face Hamline at 3:30 p.m. EST.
