MEMPHIS, TN. – The Wesleyan women's tennis team closed out their season opening weekend at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's National Indoor Championships with a 4-0 victory over No. 7 Johns Hopkins University on Sunday morning, playing for fifth place in the tournament as they return home to Middletown, 2-1 on the season from the University of Memphis' Leftwich Tennis Center.
Following a Friday night loss to No. 5 Emory and a Saturday morning consolation win over No. 18 Sewanee, the Cardinals played out their time for fifth place against the Bluejays in a short and sweet morning matchup.
The Cardinals went double in doubles play, picking up two wins at No. 1 and No. 2 and collected their first point of the morning.
Lane Durkin '27 and
Sarah Youngberg '26 turned out a 7-5 win over Sophia Kim and Ava Li as the top pairing in the lineup.
Jackie Soloveychik '27 and
Natalia Leroy '28 went 6-2 over Jay Xiao and Lia Melvin.
Durkin, the only Cardinal to run 3-0 in singles play in the tournament, picked up her third win at No. 3 as the second point of the match defeating Sydney Langer, 6-1, 6-1. Finishing second to Lane, Leroy's 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 4 over Sahana Sanjeev boosted the Cardinals to a 3-0 lead before Soloveychik finished out the match at No.1. Soloveychik toppled Kim in a 7-6, 6-1 final.
The matches at No. 2, No. 5, and No. 6 featuring Youngberg,
Olivia Chalik '28, and
Alexandra Burnett '27 went unfinished.
The Cardinals return home to Middletown for a NESCAC showdown on Saturday, March 8, when they host Bowdoin at 2 p.m.
