Cardinals Pull Up with a Sweep of Hope

NEWPORT NEWS, VA. – Earning their sixth straight win, the Wesleyan women's tennis team was firing on all cylinders to play out a 7-0 sweep of Hope College on Friday afternoon during their Spring Break trip at Christopher Newport's Eyre Courts.

Lane Durkin '27, who has been nothing short of stellar to start the season, got the Cardinals started on the singles play front at No. 2. Defeating Hadley Krygier, Durkin earned the second point of the afternoon, going 6-2, 6-0. Earning a full sweep at No. 5, Alexandra Burnett '27 toppled Madison Wei in a 6-0, 6-0 victory.

Sarah Youngberg '26, continuing a tear at No. 3 for the Cardinals, won her match with only one dropped point as she cleared Sullivan Moran 6-1, 6-0. Turning out at the top of the lineup, Jackie Soloveychik '27 went 6-1, 6-0 over Amanda Lopykinski in contested matchup.

Filling in at No. 4, Lucinda Gatsiounis '28 put on another showing with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Hopes' Miyako Coffey. Earning the final point, Macie Carlos '27 at No. 6 was the prizewinner with a 7-5, 6-0 match win over Kaitlyn Stievator.

Sweeping all three doubles matches for the first point, Soloveychik and Carlos were the first to finish as the No. 3 pairing on the afternoon. The duo defeated Wei and Pheobe Walker, 6-2. At No. 1, Durkin and Youngberg put out a 6-2 win over Lopykinski and Moran. The No. 2 pairing of Burnett and Gatsiounis was a 6-3 triumph for the Cardinals over Krygier and Coffey.

The Cardinals return to action on Saturday, March 22, when they play No. 26 Washington & Lee at 10 a.m.
