NEWPORT NEWS, VA. – Holding out on an edge through their seventh match win in a row, the Wesleyan women's tennis team took Top 10 Washington & Lee University to a 4-3 defeat on Saturday afternoon at Christopher Newport's Eyre Courts as the team nears the end of their Spring Break road trip.
Lucinda Gatsiounis '28 and
Alexandra Burnett '27 carried the Cardinals on the day as the No. 3 doubles pairing. During singles play Gatsiounis was the first to claim a win as the No. 5, defeating Haley Stoltz in a 6-2, 6-2 final. Burnett filled out the afternoon lineup for the Cardinals at No. 6, facing Annie Jennings in a straight set win that saw her take a 6-2, 6-3 point.
Challenged with Allie Murrell at No. 2,
Lane Durkin '27 made quick work to claim the third point of the match for the Cardinals going 6-4, 6-2 as one of the highlights of the match.
The Cardinals were ahead heading into the individual matches, sweeping doubles play for the first match point. Burnett and Gatsiounis went 6-3 over Isabella Custard and Sarah Donnelly. Durkin and
Sarah Youngberg '26 finished 6-2 as the top doubles pairing over Lauren Long and Grace Lorenz. Reunited as the No. 2,
Jackie Soloveychik '27 and
Natalia Leroy '28 defeated Jennings and Stoltz, 6-2.
The Generals picked up wins at No. 1, No 3, and No. 4.
The Cardinals return to action on Sunday, March 23, when they face No. 18 NYU in the final matchup of the road trip, beginning at 9 a.m.
