Cardinals Sweep NYU in Final Spring Break Matchup

NEWPORT NEWS, VA. – The Wesleyan women's tennis team closes out their Spring Break trip undefeated as they close the first 10 games of the season with a 9-1 record after posting a 7-0 sweep of No. 18 NYU on Sunday afternoon from Christopher Newports Eyre Courts.

Through the first 10 games of the season, the Cardinals have dropped just one match, falling to No. 6 Emory at the ITA Indoor National Championships on Feb. 28. Since then, the Cardinals have run nine victories in a row with a revolving lineup of young stars as they return home to begin NESCAC competition.

Lucinda Gatsiounis '28 opened singles action with a win at No. 5. Facing Norah Staunton, Gatsiounis took off on the lead in both sets and settled a quick match at 6-2, 6-1. Sitting at No. 4, Natalia Leroy '28 played Aditi Narayan, jumping to a four-game deficit in each set before Narayan could register a point to earn the 6-3, 6-1 win.

Alexandra Burnett '27 forced  Siona Vallabhaneni to play catch up in both sets one and two, but Vallabhaneni was not able to match Burnett's 6-2, 6-3 pace at No. 6. Showing out at No. 2, Lane Durkin '27 allowed just three game wins from Isabella Hartman, downing Hartman in a 6-3, 6-0 victory.

At No. 1 and No. 3, Jackie Soloveychik '27 and Sarah Youngberg '26 put away nearly identical match scores, both rallying to a third set tiebreaker. Victoria Wang gained an early lead on Youngberg at No. 3, but was unable to jump further as Youngberg tied the match up at one and ran it back in set three to win 4-6, 6-3, 10-1. Playing Jimena Menendez for a second time, Soloveychik was at the disadvantage after set one, ultimately winning two in a row to beat Menendez 4-6, 6-3, 10-4.

Soloveychik and Leroy were the winners of the No. 2 doubles match, defeating Menendez and Emma Kast 6-4. The top pairing of Youngberg and Durkin closed out a 6-2 win over Hartman and Wang.

The Cardinals return home to face Hamilton on Saturday, March 29, with action beginning at 10 a.m.
