No. 4 Men’s Crew Opens Spring Season with Clean Sweep of No. 5 Coast Guard

Cardinals win all four varsity races by at least 10 seconds

NEW LONDON, Conn. – It was sheer dominance out on the Thames River this morning as the defending national champion and No. 4 ranked Wesleyan men's crew team saw all four varsity boats defeat their counterparts from No. 5 Coast Guard on Saturday. In their first action of the spring season, the Cardinals were more than ready for their opener as all four boats won by at least 10 seconds. Facing minimal wind and relatively warm temperatures, the Cardinals set the tone with a win in the 3rd varsity 8 to kick off the proceedings, as Wesleyan's boat finished in 5:50.1 while the Bears clocked in at 6:20.7.

The varsity 8 race followed and the reigning national title-winning boat (which featured a host of returners from the 2024 squad) came out and crossed the line in 5:30 on the 1820m course. Coast Guard managed a time of 5:40.1 as the Cardinals' top boat captured their first win of the new season.

Next up was the 2nd varsity 8 race with Wesleyan again winning comfortably as the Cardinals posted a time of 5:52.6 while Coast Guard finished in 6:06.8 for a +14.2 second difference between the two boats. Wrapping up the day with the 4th varsity 8, the Cardinals managed their biggest margin of victory with Wesleyan's time of 6:42.4 just 0.1 seconds off winning by a full minute, as Coast Guard clocked in at 7:42.3.

A perfect 4-for-4 day sets up Wesleyan well heading into the Class of 2003 Cup hosted at Lake Quinsigamond by WPI next Saturday. The Cardinals are the defending champion of the event and have won the trophy two straight years and in three of the past four seasons.
