No. 2 Men’s Crew Varsity 8 Finishes Runner-Up at New England Championships

Cardinals place Top 3 in all four varsity 8 races

WORCESTER, Mass. – The No. 2 Wesleyan men's crew team saw all four of their varsity 8 boats place Top 3 in their respective races, with the Varsity 8 boat finishing as the runner-up on Saturday at the New England Championships on Lake Quinsigamond. This marks the third straight season the Cardinals' top boat has finished either runner-up or in first place at the New England Championships. The Varsity 8 came into the day with un undefeated record in the spring season, recording four first place finishes in four races, and they kept the streak going with the fastest time in heat 2 during preliminaries, clocking in at 6:04.671 to earn a spot in the grand final later in the evening.
 
In that V8 grand final, it came down to the final 500m where the Cardinals placed second with a time of 5:51.765, finishing just over two seconds behind Trinity (5:49.483) while beating Williams by half a second and MIT by just under two seconds.
 
The 2nd Varsity 8 played out much the same with the Cardinals earning a spot in the grand final with the second-fastest time in heat 3 of preliminaries. In a hotly contested grand final, Wesleyan's 2V8 finished third-fastest with a time of 6:09.929. Trinity won by just over a second ahead of Tufts while Williams was less than a second behind Wesleyan in fourth place.
 
The 3rd Varsity 8 also raced to a third place finish, with the Cardinals earning a spot in the grand final with the second-fastest time in heat 2 of preliminaries. Wesleyan's third boat clocked in at 6:14.413 to finish behind Tufts (6:09.193) and Trinity (6:11.965) and ahead of Williams (6:17.321).
 
Wesleyan's 4th Varsity 8 completed a successful day with a New England title, racing to a first place finish in a dominant showing ahead of runner-up Trinity by nearly eight seconds while Tufts was nearly 15 seconds behind the Cardinals' time of 6:43.416.
 
The Cardinals also fielded a boat in the 3rd Varsity 4 competition and Wesleyan clocked in at 8:16.906 to take second place out of seven boats, finishing behind only MIT.
 
Wesleyan is back in action at the National Invitational Rowing Championship on Sunday, May 10 at Lake Quinsigamond.
